The Fairfax County Police Department responds to citizen complaints involving inoperative (junk) vehicles on private property. If you are aware of an inoperative/junk vehicle on commercial property, or a property that is governed by an HOA, please contact property management.

Report inoperative vehicles through the online form.

• Your name will not be divulged.  The release of complainants’ names is protected, even from a Freedom of Information Act request.
• Virginia Code 2.2-3706 (E)
• The identity of any individual providing information about a crime or criminal activity under a promise of anonymity shall not be disclosed.

The definition of an inoperative vehicle is:

• Any motor vehicle, trailer, or semi-trailer parked on private property, which,:
  • Is not capable of starting and moving under its own power; OR
  • Does not display valid license plates; OR
  • Does not display an inspection decal that is valid or displays an inspection decal that has been expired for more than 60 days.

Failure to comply with removing an inoperative vehicle will result in the violator being charged with a class 2 misdemeanor. Conviction of a Class 2 misdemeanor is punishable by up to six months in jail and up to a $1,000.00 fine.

Chapter 110 of the Fairfax County Code regulates the keeping of inoperative motor vehicles and trailers.

“It shall be unlawful for any person, firm or corporation to keep any inoperative motor vehicle, trailer, or semi-trailer on any property zoned for residential, commercial, or agricultural purposes unless such vehicle is kept within a fully enclosed building or structure or is kept completely screened or shielded from view."
