Compliments and Complaints

The Fairfax County Police Department's Internal Affairs Bureau handles complaints and compliments involving Fairfax County police officers and civilian employees of the police department. We are committed to providing professional services to the community and to being accountable to the public. Investigators assigned to the Internal Affairs Bureau investigate each complaint or incident thoroughly and impartially, as well as prepare investigative reports used for policy change recommendations, training recommendations, consideration, or disciplinary actions.

The Compliance Division of IAB supports the Department’s commitment to accountability by overseeing the agency’s dual accreditation programs, conducting internal inspections and audits, and independently reviewing investigations to ensure consistency, transparency, and adherence to policy.

File a Compliment

  • Send an email to the Chief's Office.
  • Contact the Internal Affairs Bureau via email.
  • Call the Internal Affairs Bureau at 703-246-2793.
  • Mail or deliver your compliment in person to the Public Safety Headquarters located at 12099 Government Center Pkwy, Fairfax, VA 22035.
  • Visit any police district station and ask to speak to a supervisor.
File a Complaint

A complaint is an allegation of an act or omission which, if proven true, would amount to employee misconduct. It is also an expression of dissatisfaction with a policy, practice, procedure, philosophy, service level, or legal standard of the police department. To file a complaint, use the online complaint form or any of the methods listed for filing a compliment.

  • All compliments are forwarded to the employee’s commander.
  • Commanders notify the employee and place a copy of the compliment in the employee’s personnel file.
  • Supervisors will consider all compliments and complaints when conducting periodic performance reviews.

  • Your complaint will be assigned to the appropriate supervisor for investigation, and you will be contacted about it.
  • Your complaint may remain with the employee’s immediate supervisor; be sent up the chain of command, or forwarded to Internal Affairs, depending on the severity of the situation.
  • FCPD General Order 301 defines completion timelines for administrative investigations based on the investigation type and the investigating entity. Complainants should expect to be contacted by the assigned supervisor or investigator within the timelines defined within General Order 301.
