Since 1995, School Resource Officers (SROs) have been instrumental in maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for students. They offer critical law enforcement support to school administrators while also fostering trust and positive relationships within the school community.
Specialized Training
Officers selected for the SRO program receive specialized training from the department, including:
- Mental Health Specific Training and Crisis Intervention Training in accordance with established and certified state standards.
- Disability awareness training.
- Implicit bias and racial bias training, outlining attitudes and stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner.
- Restorative justice techniques and the Alternative Accountability Program.
The FCPD and FCPS collaboratively memorialize the practices for our partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding.
Beginning in the fall of 2026, the FCPD will staff 52 SROs and 4 SRO Supervisors throughout the county, assigned to high, secondary, and middle schools. The School Liaison Commander oversees the operational and administrative functions of the FCPD SRO Program and serves as the direct point of contact with the FCPS.
Although an SRO's primary function is for law enforcement, they also focus on mentoring, educating, and promoting a safe learning atmosphere for all students.
