The Internal Affairs Bureau (IAB) oversees administrative investigations related to the conduct of Department personnel and inspections of organizational components.
Compliance Division

The Compliance Division of the Internal Affairs Bureau supports the Department’s commitment to accountability by overseeing the agency’s dual accreditation programs, conducting internal inspections and audits, and independently reviewing investigations to ensure consistency, transparency, and adherence to policy.
The Fairfax County Police Department is proud to be dually accredited; internationally through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) and at the state level through the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission (VLEPSC).

FCPD has maintained an Advanced Law Enforcement accreditation status with CALEA since 2016. The department received re-accreditation status with CALEA in 2024.

FCPD has been accredited through VLEPSC since 1996. The department received re-accreditation status with VLEPSC in 2025.
Accreditation is a voluntary process that agencies may choose to engage in, and FCPD is one of only a few agencies in the commonwealth with dual accreditation, confirming our commitment to transparency, accountability, and observance of national best practices in law enforcement.
Investigations Division
The Investigations Division of the Internal Affairs Bureau handles compliments and complaints involving Fairfax County police officers and civilian employees of the police department. We are committed to providing professional services to the community and to being accountable to the public. Investigators assigned to the division examine each complaint or incident thoroughly and impartially, as well as prepare investigative reports used for policy change recommendations, training recommendations, consideration, or disciplinary actions.
