Organized Crime and Narcotics Division
The Organized Crime and Narcotics Division investigate fatal opioid overdoses, suppress violent crime, and enforce drug laws countywide.
Overdose Investigations Unit (OIU)
The Overdose Investigations Unit investigates all fatal opioid overdoses in Fairfax County. This unit provides support and services to victims and their families as well as arresting those responsible for their role in the fatal overdose. Public presentations and recent trend analysis are handled by members of this team to educate community members with the goal of reducing overdoses.
Violent Crime Suppression Unit (VCS)
The Violent Crime Suppression Unit is a team designed to rapidly deploy targeted enforcement strategies to suppress criminal activity, deter violence, and apprehend violent or organized crime offenders. This team operates in response to intelligence gathered from various sources to include district station crime analysts and community concerns.
Narcotics Unit
The Narcotics Unit is responsible for investigating, enforcing, and suppressing offenses involving controlled substances. Detectives assigned to this unit provide guidance and support to all divisions within the police department with regard to drug related questions and concerns.
Special Investigations Division
The Special Investigations Division targets organized and high-threat criminal activity across Fairfax County through three specialized units focused on motor vehicle theft, fugitive apprehension, and gang activity.
Auto Crimes Enforcement (ACE) Unit
The primary mission of the Auto Crimes Enforcement (ACE) Unit is to prevent, investigate, and combat motor vehicle thefts in Fairfax County through a combination of enforcement operations and innovative investigative techniques. ACE detectives work proactively with businesses and the community to deter auto thefts, identify, apprehend, and prosecute members of organized theft groups. This team operates in response to intelligence gathered from various sources, including crime analysis, the Real-Time Crime Center, community reports, and investigative units, with the goal of recovering vehicles stolen in Fairfax and from other jurisdictions.
Fugitive Tracking and Apprehension Unit
The Fugitive Tracking and Apprehension Unit's mission is to apprehend individuals with outstanding warrants, particularly those with a propensity for violence and those actively evading capture. Our members are deputized United States Marshals partnered with the Capital Area Regional Task Force (CARFTF). They operate in the immediate Capital Area region and strive to make the community safer by apprehending the region's most dangerous and violent fugitives.
Gang Investigations Unit (GIU)
The Gang Investigations Unit investigates, suppresses, and works to combat gang activity in Fairfax County. By identifying and disrupting activities by criminal street gangs, the unit enhances public safety, protects at-risk youth, and supports long-term solutions that strengthen neighborhoods and prevent future gang involvement. The unit is actively engaged in providing education to communities, schools and regional partners. The Gang Unit is a regional leader in intelligence gathering, dissemination and coordination.
Financial Crimes Unit
The Financial Crimes Unit is comprised of a combination of sworn detectives and civilian investigative analysts. Members assigned to the unit collaborate with regional partners to gather relevant intelligence on the evolving landscape of financial related crimes within the County of Fairfax and abroad. The mission of the unit is to detect, apprehend, and successfully prosecute criminal violators occurring within Fairfax County. Threats and Intelligence Division
Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU)
The Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU) investigates threats to public safety and supports cases involving federal coordination, surveillance, and risk assessment. The unit investigates bias crimes and incidents, manages felon-in-possession cases under Operation Press Check, and conducts surveillance operations in support of active investigations. CIU serves as the department's liaison to federal law enforcement partners and handles Task Force Officer (TFO) related cases. The unit also responds to swatting incidents, conducts officer risk assessments, and investigates matters related to terrorism.
Threat Assessment and Management
Threat Assessment and Management investigates and mitigates threats of mass violence, defined as threats targeting two or more persons, including those directed at businesses, places of worship, and schools. The unit also responds to bomb threats and provides guidance on Emergency Substantial Risk Orders (ESRO). The unit handles threats against persons of interest, including politicians, CEOs, and other high-ranking government officials, working with the National Capital Region Protective Detail Group on these cases.
