Project Background

The Fairfax County Wastewater Collection Division (WCD) has performed a routine assessment of sewers that cross, or parallel, streams and stream valleys throughout the County. As part of routine maintenance, WCD is taking a systematic approach addressing sewer assets in need of repair and performing local stream stabilization to protect the sewer segments (including manholes). Protection of these sewer crossings contributes to our mission of helping to decrease the risk of sanitary sewer overflows.

This project will address eleven (11) sites located throughout the County for this round of routine maintenance repairs. Work will include asset protection of the sewer crossing, creekbank stabilization, and encasement work. The project will also address any identified pipe repairs to renew the sewers.

Project Description

As part of routine maintenance, Fairfax County Wastewater Collection Division (WCD) is taking a systematic approach addressing sewer assets in need of repair and protection in the vicinity of creeks and streams at eleven (11) sites located throughout the County. Work will include asset protection of the sewer crossing, creekbank stabilization, encasement work, some point repairs and full replacement where needed.

What To Expect

During design, residents may see surveyors in small groups carrying tablets access the creeks where our projects are located with minimal disturbance to the community. Prior to construction, the County will reach out to affected property owners at each site once again and discuss any anticipated impacts with them.

During construction, it is anticipated that construction impacts will last for only a few days in one location along the pipeline as the work progresses quickly. Impacted stakeholders will be notified in advance of construction activities. Some of the construction will be performed using trenchless methods to reduce the impact to roads and traffic.

Project Cost and Funding Source

Both design and construction are fully funded through sewer service charges from existing customers and availability charges, which are one-time fees for the initial connection to the system. No tax dollars are funding these improvements.
