Project Background

Funding for the new Fairview Fire Station was approved in the 2018 Public Safety Bond Referendum. The existing station was constructed in 1981 and the facility and building systems have exceeded their useful life. The new station’s increased capacity will meet the increased service demand for emergency medical and fire suppression needs of the area. The project also includes a temporary off-site fire station to maintain fire and rescue services during construction.

Project Description

The existing 8,500 square-foot, 1-story, 2-bay station will be replaced with an approximately 13,500 square-foot, two-story , three-bay fire station on the existing site. The new building will meet the programmatic needs of the current and future fire station operations, including space for additional staff members and individual bunk rooms, updated apparatus bays, administrative and living spaces

The project incorporates various sustainability strategies and has a goal to achieve a minimum LEED Gold certification, 50% energy reduction, Net Zero energy design, and will utilize all electrical systems and equipment. The project includes Photovoltaic (PV) panels and Geothermal heating and cooling systems to achieve Net Zero Energy design.

Project Location

The project is located near the intersection of Burke Centre Parkway and Ox Road (5600 Burke Centre Parkway, Fairfax Station, Virginia). The site is bounded by Burke Centre Parkway to the north, and by Ox Road to the east, residential single-family homes to the west and the St. Peter in the Woods Episcopal Church to the south. Fairview Elementary School is located to the east of the site, across Ox Road.

Project Phase

The project completed the design phase and construction phase has started on April 18, 2025.  

A “Pardon Our Dust” Virtual Community Meeting was conducted on March 26, 2025 at 7 p.m. Project update information and a timeline for the new Fairview Fire Station 32 was provided. 

Timeline

Construction of the new station: Spring 2025 – Spring 2027

What to Expect

• The fire and rescue staff will move to the newly constructed Temporary Fairview Fire Station at 11112 Chapel Road, Fairfax Station, and will be in service for the duration of the construction of the Fairview Permanent Fire Station.
• Upon completion of the permanent fire station, staff will transition operations to the new facility.
• Upon resuming the fire and rescue operation at the permanent station, the temporary fire station building and site will be demolished, and the site will be restored to its natural state.

Funding was approved in the 2018 Public Safety Bond Referendum.
