A virtual meeting was held on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at 7 p.m. to present information on the stream restoration project and the 35% Design.
Project Background
Piney Freda Bank Erosion
Piney Freda Bank Erosion
Piney Freda Main Channel Erosion
Piney Freda Outfall Entrenched Condition
This project seeks to restore approximately 1500 linear feet of stream channel. The existing stream channel has vertical erosion that has resulted in the stream channel incising below the effective root depth of the forest stand, disconnecting the stream from the floodplain, threatening tree loss, as well as damage to private property and residential structures. One of the structures is threatened by lateral erosion of the channel, where a 7-10 foot near vertical bank is within about 25 feet of the foundation.
Project Description
Restoration efforts seek to raise the channel bottom to reconnect the channel with the floodplain and realign the channel, where necessary, to protect structures and restore stable slopes. Natural channel design will stabilize the stream bed, allow for riparian and wetland species to be planted, and improve water quality and conveyance capacity.
Project Location
Project site is NW of Vienna, on HOA owned property between Kedge Drive and Freda Drive. Site access will be from the dead end section of Meadow Vally Drive.
The project area is outlined in red.
Project Phase
Pre-Design Phase
Project Benefits
Protection of structures and property.
Ecological benefits through improved connection to the floodplain and planting of native species.
Improved water quality through stabilization of the stream bed and reduced potential for erosion.
Timeline
Design Phase is currently projected to be completed in Fall 2026. Construction timeline to be determined.
What to Expect
At times, contractors, consultants, and staff may be onsite to evaluate the design and validate field conditions and proposed improvements. Staff will be wearing high-visibility clothing.
Project Cost and Funding Source
Design of the Piney Branch Trib at Freda Drive stream restoration project is funded for $595,000. Construction funding is dependent upon budget availability in future Fiscal Years. Stormwater projects are funded through the Fairfax County Stormwater Service District.
Presentations to the Community
As the project advances through the iterative design development process, community meetings will be scheduled to present the project and its design to the residents adjacent to the project and to obtain feedback from the community. Meetings will be scheduled for a 35% design, 65% design, final design.
On Aug. 21, 2025, a community presentation was held to discuss the Piney Branch Tributary at Freda Drive steam restoration project.
