2nd Lieutenant Hyung Kim Promoted to First Lieutenant

1st Lt. KimSecond Lieutenant Hyung Kim was recently promoted to First Lieutenant and will assume the position of A-Squad Commander in the Adult Detention Center.

1st Lt. Kim has been with the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office for 13 years. He was born in South Korea and moved to the United States when he was 8 years old. Right after high school, he joined the Army and served in Iraq. After three years, he left the Army and planned to use the GI Bill to attend college. In the meantime, his brother owned a construction company and needed help, so Kim attended Northern Virginia Community College part-time and worked for his brother full-time.

Life doesn’t always go as planned. The Army called him back to serve. As background, the Army’s Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) consists of trained individuals who have previously served in the Active Army or Selected Reserve and need to fulfill their military service obligation under federal law. The service/on-call obligation is eight years. With one year left on his obligation, Kim was called back and sent to Iraq for a second time.

When Kim came back a year later, he and his wife began planning for the next chapter of their lives. He applied to be a deputy sheriff with the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office. Not long after, he got a call from PFC Alma Smith in Human Resources (now Major Alma Smith), who offered him a full-time position.

For his first 10 years, Kim worked in the Adult Detention Center, where he rose to the rank of Second Lieutenant. In 2021, he was transferred to the Fiscal & Material Management Section in the Administrative Services Division. “I enjoyed working in Supply. It wasn’t just about ordering supplies. There were financial and logistics components for the operation,” he explains.

Most recently, he was transferred to Professional Services where he was tasked with strategically revamping the agency’s special projects.

What has been your favorite assignment? “Hands down, it’s confinement. I am a people person, and I enjoy the camaraderie among the deputies. We are never alone, and we can relate to each other.” He also enjoys interacting with inmates. “I learn about how they got into this unfortunate situation. Some stories are interesting, and some are really sad.”
