Service of Civil Documents

Civil enforcement deputies are tasked with serving court issued documents including summons, subpoenas, notices, evictions, warrants in debt, levies, Sheriff’s Sales, and many other types of civil papers. They also provide assistance to the patrol officers when necessary. The Civil Enforcement section is responsible for the delivery of processes in a timely and efficient manner.

Fees for the services listed below are payable to Fairfax County Sheriff

Fees for service are generally governed by Va. Code §17.1-272.

In-State Fees

The fee for general service on behalf of an in-state entity is $12. Payment must be cash, certified check or money order. No other form of payment (including company/firm checks) will be accepted. 

Please note:

For any MONEY ORDER, whether to pay in-state or Sheriff's Sale notice fees, the signature of the purchaser is required on the front at the bottom. 

Out-of-State Fees

The process and service fee for servicing any papers returnable to an out-of-state entity is $80 ($75 plus $5 notary fee). Payment must be a cashier's check, certified check, or money order. No other form of payment (including company/firm checks) will be accepted. 

Please send:

  • A cover letter outlining name and address of person to be served as well as a list of documents to be served
  • 2 copies of the documents to be served
  • A self-addressed stamped envelope to return the affidavit of service
  • Payment of $80 in the form of a cashier's check, certified check, or money order. (No other form of payment is accepted.)
  • The $80 fee is per address, entity, corporation, or individual
  • Service will be in person only, unless substitute service is authorized in writing
Sheriff's Sale Fees

The fee for posting a Sheriff's Sale notice is $100. Payment much be cash, certified check or money order. No other form of payment (including company/firm checks) will be accepted. 

Other Fees

All civil fees not described above are payable to the Fairfax County General District Court, 4110 Chain Bridge Road, Fairfax, VA 22030. For a list of payment options and a description of the filing and statutory agent service fees, please see the General District Court's Civil Division Fee Page.
