The Fairfax County Sheriff's Office complies with the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (VFOIA), the state law governing access by residents of Virginia and representatives of the media -- circulating or broadcasting in Virginia -- to public records and to meetings of public bodies. VFOIA provides that, with some specific exemptions and exceptions, all meetings of public bodies shall be open to the public and all public records open for public inspection.

The Sheriff's Office is allowed to make reasonable charges for any VFOIA request that does not exceed the actual cost of such request. If we determine in advance that the cost of a request will exceed $200, we can require a deposit. The Sheriff's Office requires payment of any outstanding prior charges for the requestor before any future request will be honored.
