The Tax Relief Office assists seniors, people with disabilities, disabled veterans, and certain surviving spouses from paying property taxes in Fairfax County. The program also offers a rent relief program for seniors and people with disabilities. 

Disabled Veterans or Surviving Spouses

Yes, certain disabled veterans and their spouses may be eligible for an exemption from local real estate tax on their principal residence. Qualifying veterans must be rated by the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA) as having a 100%, total and permanent, service-connected disability; or with a service-connected, permanent and total disability rating of less than 100%, but receiving VA benefits at the 100% rating due to individual unemployability.

If you have already been approved for the Fairfax County Real Estate Tax Exemption on one property and you would like to transfer your exemption to a different property, please complete and submit an Exemption Transfer Form. The Exemption Transfer Form can be found on our Tax Exemption for Disabled Veteran or Surviving Spouse page, under Exemption Transfer.

If you are a qualifying disabled veteran who is planning on purchasing a property in Fairfax County, you may request a pre-certification letter from the Tax Relief Office. To do so, please email taxrelief@fairfaxcounty.gov your qualifying Summary of Benefits Letter from the VA, the address of the property you intend to purchase, and your anticipated closing date, with the subject line “Disabled Veteran Pre-Certification Letter Request.” Please note that you will still need to apply and be approved for the Real Estate Tax Exemption for the property to be officially tax exempt.

Yes, certain disabled veterans may be eligible for an exemption from personal property taxes on one vehicle classified as a car or a pick-up truck which is registered and operated for individual use. Qualifying veterans must be rated by the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA) as having a 100%, total and permanent, service-connected disability; or with a service-connected, permanent and total disability rating of less than 100%, but receiving VA benefits at the 100% rating due to individual unemployability.

If you have already been approved for the Fairfax County Personal Property Tax Exemption on one property and you would like to transfer your exemption to a different property, please complete and submit an Exemption Transfer Form. The Exemption Transfer Form can be found on our Tax Exemption for Disabled Veteran or Surviving Spouse page, under Exemption Transfer.

The surviving spouse of a member of the U.S. Armed Forces who has been killed in action may be eligible for a full or partial exemption of real estate taxes for their principal residence and up to one acre of land. The surviving spouse of a covered first responder who has been killed in the line of duty may be eligible for a full or partial exemption of real estate taxes for their principal residence and up to one acre of land. There is no personal property tax exemption offered to the surviving spouses of individuals referenced above. A real estate tax exemption is offered to qualifying individuals which can be found referenced in previous questions. 
 

Tax Relief for Seniors and People with Disabilities

Yes, Fairfax County provides real estate tax exemption to residents who are either 65 years of age or older or permanently and totally disabled and meet the income and asset eligibility requirements. Yes, the additional changes approved effective January 1, 2023 include the following:

  • A new 75% tax relief bracket for gross household income from $60,001 to $70,000.
  • A cap on the maximum assessment value for relief. The maximum assessment will equal 125% of the mean assessed value of all residential properties in Fairfax County for the applicable tax year. 
  • A deferral option for qualifying individuals with a total combined income of less than or equal to $100,000 and a net combined financial worth less than or equal to $500,000. Any taxes deferred by this option will be subject to interest at the rate of the prime rate set by the Wall Street Journal plus 1.00 % per year (not to exceed 8%).
