Definition
TNC's are companies like Lyft and Uber that provide prearranged transportation services for compensation, using an online-enabled application or electronic platform (sometimes referred to as "ridesharing" or "ride sourcing") to connect passengers with drivers. (Code of Virginia ยง 46.2-2099.48)
Please visit the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website for more information on TNC.
Only personal vehicles may be used to provide TNC services
If the vehicle is driven mostly for personal use and total business mileage driven each year to provide TNC services does not exceed 50% of the total annual mileage, the vehicle may be eligible for the state Vehicle Tax Subsidy (PPTRA) for personal property taxes.
If the total annual gross receipts generated from the TNC services provided exceed $10,000, a Business, Professional and Occupational License (BPOL) is required.
