FCDOT has completed its work on the Shirley Gate Road Extension Study and has transitioned to working on the Project. As part of the Study, the work was divided into two pieces:

  1. The interchange at Popes Head Road and Shirley Gate Road extension and a portion of the Shirley Gate Road extension as a new alignment roadway from Fairfax County Parkway to the future Fairfax County Patriot Park Access Road entrance. This piece is now a part of the Fairfax County Parkway widening project from Route 29 to Route 123, which is managed by VDOT. VDOT has held a public meeting and a series of individual HOA meetings to solicit feedback, please contact VDOT directly with questions.

  2. Shirley Gate Road extension from Braddock Road to the future Patriot Park Access Road entrance. This project is managed by FCDOT and is currently funded through the design phase.
    • The FCDOT Capital Projects Section is initiating preliminary engineering efforts and conceptual design plans to help define the overall project configuration. Preliminary studies may be performed in this phase, including environmental assessments, land surveys, geotechnical studies, hydrologic/hydraulic analyses, traffic studies, etc.
    • The current active task is survey. FCDOT will be actively engaging the impacted neighborhood to present different options and to solicit community comments before finalizing any design.
