The Fairfax County Department of Transportation held a Design Public Meeting on the Shirley Gate Road Extension Project on Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m. FCDOT presented Preliminary Design plans for the project and is seeking public input. Comments closed Oct. 29, 2021.

Project Description and Background
The Shirley Gate Road Extension Project will consist of a two-lane road that connects the existing intersection of Shirley Gate Road and Braddock Road to the Fairfax County Parkway. The one-mile road will provide the following benefits:
- Another option from northbound Fairfax County Parkway to I-66 eastbound
- Multimodal access to (future) Patriot Park East
- Additional bicycle/pedestrian connectivity
- Improved travel time from southbound Shirley Gate to southbound Fairfax County Parkway
The extension of Shirley Gate Road was added to the Fairfax County Transportation Plan in 1991, and in 2014, was included in the County’s Six-Year Transportation Project Priorities plan. A Planning Study with stakeholder outreach was conducted in 2015.
Estimated Project Budget: $22M
Estimated Schedule:
- 30% Design - Complete
- Public Feedback - Fall 2021
- Board of Supervisors Design Endorsement - Late Fall 2021
- Final Design - Anticipated 2023
- Right of Way Acquisition - Anticipated 2024
- Construction - Anticipated 2026 (dependent on full funding)
