Public Feedback Review Underway; Land Acquisition Planned for Fall 2026

FCDOT is reviewing comments received during the public meeting and online survey and will incorporate feedback into the project plans where feasible. The updated plans will then be submitted to VDOT for review. Land acquisition activities are anticipated to begin in fall 2026.

Public Meeting Information

Shirley Gate Road Extension MapFCDOT held a public meeting on the Shirley Gate Road Extension Project on June 1, at Willow Springs Elementary School in Fairfax. Comments closed on July 1, 2026.

FCDOT held a Design Public Meeting on the Shirley Gate Road Extension Project on Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m. FCDOT presented Preliminary Design plans for the project and is seeking public input. Comments closed Oct. 29, 2021.

Project Description and Background

Shirley Gate Road Extension Proposed AlignmentThe Shirley Gate Road Extension Project will consist of a two-lane road that connects the existing intersection of Shirley Gate Road and Braddock Road to the Fairfax County Parkway. The one-mile road will provide the following benefits:

  • Another option from northbound Fairfax County Parkway to I-66 eastbound
  • Multimodal access to (future) Patriot Park East
  • Additional bicycle/pedestrian connectivity
  • Improved travel time from southbound Shirley Gate to southbound Fairfax County Parkway

The extension of Shirley Gate Road was added to the Fairfax County Transportation Plan in 1991, and in 2014, was included in the County’s Six-Year Transportation Project Priorities plan. A Planning Study with stakeholder outreach was conducted in 2015.

Estimated Project Budget: $22M

Estimated Schedule (Updated June 2026):

  • Land Acquisition Begins – Fall 2026
  • Land Acquisition Completes – Summer 2027
  • Final Design Approval – Spring 2027
  • Utility Relocation – Summer 2027- Spring 2028
  • Construction Begins – Summer 2028
  • Construction Completes- December 2029
