WHEREAS, service to others is a hallmark of the American character, and central to how we meet out challenges; and
WHEREAS, we have a responsibility as individuals, neighbors, community members and citizens of Fairfax County to recognize that all children need love, support, security and a place to call home; and
WHEREAS, Fairfax County foster parents are caring for and nurturing more than 200 children and youth in foster care today; and
WHEREAS, foster parents provide the love, safety and stability that children need in order to overcome past traumatic experiences so that they can reach their full potential; and
WHEREAS, foster parents and families require and deserve respect and support from the community and from the social service agencies who work with them; and
WHEREAS, we must come together as a community to recognize the important role foster parents play in caring for children who have experienced abuse and neglect, supporting family reunification and building strong communities; and
WHEREAS, during National Foster Care month, we celebrate all those who have invited a child in need into their hearts and into their homes, and express our profound appreciation for all who help make foster care possible; and
WHEREAS, through partnerships with families, child welfare staff, and public and private agencies, there is a collaborative effort to ensure that children in Fairfax County are supported and successful.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, on behalf of all residents of Fairfax County, does hereby proclaim the month of May 2019, as Foster Care Month.
