Food safety is more than proper temperature control and food storage. It’s also about the practices and mantras restaurant staff use to keep their patrons safe. That’s why the Consumer Protection Program focuses on education, first and foremost. We strive to help food service locations be the best they can be when it comes to preventing food-borne illness outbreaks. In addition to restaurants, we’re also out there inspecting other facilities, such as tattoo establishments, swimming pools and campgrounds to protect the public’s health.

Investigating complaints

In 2018, we responded to hundreds of foodborne illness complaints across Fairfax County - including one suspected foodborne illness outbreak.

Food service inspections

We conduct 8,000 food inspections per year of 3,400 food service establishments in Fairfax County.

Improving food safety

We focus on education so restaurants can implement better food safety practices.

STAMP Program at Wegman's

It starts with training. Every new employee who comes through our doors completes computer-based training focused on food safety and allergen awareness. Every day our leadership team has discussions about food safety – this helps us keep it on the forefront of our mind, making sure everything that we do is going to be up to par. And we have food safety coordinators in the store throughout the day who keep us in check.
