Five More Spring Events You Can’t Miss in Fairfax County Parks!

Colvin Run MillThe weather is warming and the flowers have sprung. From gardening and gadgets to bugs and boards, there are countless ways to bring the community together this spring in Fairfax County parks. Check out these fun, family-friendly events coming to a park near you!

Culmore Community Day, May 6, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Woodrow Wilson Library (6101 Knollwood Drive, Falls Church)

Join the Fairfax County Park Authority and a host of county and community partners to celebrate the diverse culture of the Culmore area. This year’s theme is “Safety: A Community Responsibility.” In addition to free entertainment, games and activities, the event also features many of Fairfax County’s supportive services provided by county agencies and local nonprofits. Don’t miss out on a day full of fun and enjoyment, including:

Live music and cultural performances

  • Facepainting
  • Animal exhibits
  • Free games, activities and crafts
  • Free health checks (eyes and dental)
  • Child ID cards
  • Public safety vehicle showcase
  • And free food!

Skate the Wake, May 13, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Wakefield Skate Park (8100 Braddock Road, Annandale)

Enjoy a day filled with skating, music and all-around fun at Skate the Wake. Meet Mimi Knoop, five-time X-Games medalist and coach of the USA Skateboarding team. This free event features a Skateboard Trick Clinic and skateboard Best Trick Contest that will be judged by professionals from the local Fairfax Surf Shop, as well as celebrity judges Mimi Knoop and Spike Mendelsohn (“Top Chef” competitor and local restaurateur). Derran Eaddy, founder of Solstik Music, will DJ this event. Visit local vendors and try your hand at graffiti art on the Wakefield skate shack.

Engineering Then & Now, May 20, noon to 3 p.m.

Colvin Run Mill (10017 Colvin Run Road, Great Falls)

The Colvin Run Mill is an example of early American mechanical engineering. Come see the mill in operation and discover historic and modern engineering. With hands-on activities, conversations with professionals from a variety of engineering fields and sample tools, you will learn how today's engineers are building on the work of engineers of the past to solve problems in the present and future. Registration is required and enrollment is $10 per person.

Spring Garden Day—The Big Plant Sale, May 20, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Green Spring Gardens (4603 Green Spring Road, Alexandria)

This popular, free event features a variety of vendors and countless assortments of plants; from the tried-and-true varieties to the rare and unusual. Go native with your plantings or add fruiting plants in your gardens. Get garden advice from our Master Gardeners or enjoy local artists, food vendors, or baked goods though the Friends of Green Spring Park Bake Sale.

Bug Fest, May 27, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Lewinsville Historic House (1659 Chain Bridge Road, McLean)

Calling all bug enthusiasts! Bug Fest is back and bigger than ever. Have a passion for the creepy-crawly creatures? This event is fun for the whole family and is designed to appeal to learners of all ages who love insects! Bug Fest will feature lots of exciting and creepy bug-themed programs, activities and demonstrations. Join an insect safari, explore live insects, observe insect collections, roll logs to find bugs, play in soil stations, go for a bug walk and even make your own bug! You can also use technology to explore the world of insects. Registration is required and enrollment is $8 per person.
