Green Spring Gardens

Inspiration, Information for Gardeners

Green Spring Gardens is a must-visit park, a year-round gold mine of information and inspiration for the home gardener. It's an outdoor classroom, a museum, and a national historic site. Its mission is to connect the community to natural and cultural resources through horticulture, education, and stewardship.
The park has a wooded stream valley with ponds, a naturalistic native plant garden, more than 20 thematic demonstration gardens, a greenhouse, a plant shop, two gift shops, a historic house, and a horticulture reference library. The gardens and educational programs focus on practical landscaping and gardening techniques that are appropriate for the Washington metro area.
Public gardens are special parks with special rules. Please see the "Public Garden Etiquette and Rules" before your visit.
Park grounds are open dawn to dusk.

Pardon our dust

April 21-May 24: A team from the National Park Service will replace the historic house steps at Green Spring Gardens. There may be brief periods when the sidewalk in front of the historic house will be blocked.

Spring Garden Day-The Big Plant Sale at Green Spring Gardens

This is a must-attend, free event for all gardeners!  Make a day at Green Spring Gardens for our Annual Spring Garden Day and Big Plant Sale on Saturday, May 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  This popular event features a variety of vendors selling countless varieties of plants; from the tried-and-true varieties to the rare and unusual.  Go native with your plantings or add fruiting plants in your gardens.  Get garden advice from our Master Gardeners or enjoy local artists, food vendors, or baked goods though the Friends of Green Spring Park Bake Sale.


Juneteenth Smudge Stick Floral Workshop

Thursday, June 19, choose between 11:15 a.m.-1:15 p.m. or 1:45-3:45 p.m., Green Spring Gardens, $60 

  • Explore smudge sticks and the cultural significance and cleansing properties 
  • Learn about the cultural significance of flowers and herbs in traditions and craft a smudge stick using meaningful herbs and flowers

Public Gardens are special parks with special rules that differ from the rules in other parks. Please observe these guidelines to keep everyone safe and to avoid damaging the gardens:

  • No balloons or kites
  • No balls, flying discs, or sporting equipment
  • No bicycles or scooter riding on walkways
  • Stay out of garden beds
  • Leash dogs and clean up dog waste
  • Commercial photography requires an FCPA permit. Call 703-642-5173

Historic Green Spring

Families adapted Green Spring's landscape and buildings from the 1700s until the 20th century. Visitors today see art exhibits, enjoy programs or tea with a tour, and shop in the historic house's museum shop.
