How is the Community Involved in Stream Restoration?

Stream restoration projects follow the guidelines in Engage Fairfax County to make sure the community is involved. Community outreach starts at the beginning of the project and continues until it’s finished. This includes sharing project details, asking community members for their thoughts and needs, and making changes to the project when possible to meet those needs.

Typical Stakeholder and Community Involvement*

  • Outreach at beginning of planning process
  • Create project website or story map (depends on stakeholder community – not all projects have a web presence)
  • 35% design community meeting
  • 65% design community meeting
  • 95% design community meeting
  • Pardon-our-dust preconstruction meeting

*Community interaction varies based on what the community needs, but it usually includes the steps mentioned above.
