The subject project is identified as LH9204 in the Little Hunting Creek Watershed Management Plan. The project is located within Fairfax County Park Authority’s Fort Hunt Park. The project scoping site visit was conducted on April 26, 2022. The stream channels exhibited deeply incised and eroded banks and the potential for further bed and bank instability. The project was selected for implementation due to the degraded condition of the channels and the riparian corridor and the potential for significant improvement in water quality and ecological function. This project is part of larger efforts to restore many of Fairfax County’s degraded streams for improving overall water quality within the County and the health of the Chesapeake Bay.
The goal of the project is to improve water quality through restoration of approximately 2,900 feet along two tributaries of South Branch. The stream restoration will be achieved via installation of grade control structures to stabilize the channels and create base-flow conditions with high connectivity to the floodplain. The existing stream alignments will be maintained to reduce disturbance to the riparian system.
