Properly installed child safety seats are one of the most effective ways to protect children in a vehicle crash. Yet national studies and local inspections consistently show that many child safety seats are installed or used incorrectly, which can reduce their effectiveness during a collision.
To help families keep children safe, the Fairfax County Sheriff's Office offers free monthly Child Safety Seat Inspection Events at the Fairfax County Courthouse Complex. During these events, certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians provide one-on-one assistance to parents, grandparents, and caregivers.
What We Do
- Inspect child safety seats for proper installation
- Ensure children are appropriately harnessed
- Review current child passenger safety recommendations
- Answer questions about rear-facing, forward-facing, and booster seats
- Demonstrate proper installation techniques
Why It Matters
A properly installed child safety seat can significantly reduce the risk of serious injury during a crash. Our technicians routinely identify issues such as loose installations, incorrect harness positioning, or the use of a seat that is not appropriate for a child's age, height, or weight.
Virginia Child Passenger Safety Requirements
All children must be in a child safety seat or a booster seat until their 8th birthday. Children 2 years old and younger must be in a rear-facing safety seat. Children who attain the minimum weight and height limit specified by the car seat manufacture may transition to a forward-facing seat with a five-point harness.
