Honor Guard performs as silent drill team. Photo by Mary Ellen DawleyThe Honor Guard is the formal representative of the Sheriff's Office at all types of functions in Fairfax County and the surrounding Washington, D.C. area, including funerals, graduations, parades, judge investitures and other special activities. The team practices together every month and takes part in an annual multi-day training session that concentrates on very precise funeral procedures.

Joining the Honor Guard is voluntary but very competitive. Many of the Sheriff's deputies who comprise the Honor Guard come from a military background, but military experience is not a requirement. Considerations for selection include a panel interview, prior experience, professional image, uniform appearance, personal grooming standards, motivation, stature/bearing, positive attitude and supervisor assessment.

Established in 1982, the Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard currently has 32 members. The team participates in competitions sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police and the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. In 2015, the Honor Guard showcased its "silent drill team" and won four gold medals at the World Police Fire Games.

For more information, please contact 2nd Lt. Brian Wancik, Honor Guard Commander.
