Small Actions, Big Impact: Make Changes That Matter

Greenhouse gas emissions seem so nebulous sometimes. How can we make small changes at home or at work that will, collectively, reduce emissions in our community? To answer this question, the Office of Environmental and Energy Coordination is launching a new public education and outreach campaign called Small Actions, Big Impact. This campaign will offer Fairfax County residents and those who work in the county numerous opportunities to learn about simple changes that can make a big difference.

Small Actions, Big Impact will focus on five topics related to energy efficiency, conservation, and use:

  • Lighting
  • Electronics and Appliances
  • Air Sealing/Leaks
  • The Water/Energy Nexus
  • The Climate/Energy Nexus

Below are a few examples of the types of content and events you can expect from this campaign.

Ask An Expert Sessions

Between February and October 2022, three Small Actions, Big Impact Ask An Expert sessions will allow you to connect one-on-one with someone who works on energy and climate-related issues for a living. The first event is scheduled for February 15 and the link to sign up is below. More information on the subsequent events will be posted in the coming months.

Ask An Expert: Lighting and Air Leaks - February 15, 2022

Ask An Expert: Electronics and Appliances – Date TBA

Ask An Expert: Save Water to Save Energy – Date TBA

How-To Videos

Over the course of nine months, look out for the release of five videos covering the topics listed above. These videos will help you better understand how you can make small changes at home or at work and will take you through common projects step-by-step.

Webinars

A series of five Small Actions, Big Impact webinars will cover the five topics from unique angles. For instance, instead of offering a webinar on how and why to change to LED lightbulbs, you may have the opportunity to attend a webinar on the history and future of lighting. Join us on a journey of discovery as we put a spin on lighting, electronics/appliances, air leaks, water conservation, and the climate/energy nexus. The dates and topics for these webinars are TBA. Stay tuned!

Infographics and Other Dynamic Content

In addition to web-based events and videos, this campaign will include content you can read or scroll through. Infographics will provide a quick snapshot of facts and figures you can use to make decisions. Or, alternatively, will illustrate the relationship between your small actions and our collective big impact.

Even small actions can make a big impact. If everyone in Fairfax County took simple steps to improve their energy use at home and at work, we would be on our way to achieving our goals for greenhouse gas reduction. Every choice you make matters.

The Small Actions, Big Impact campaign is presented by Carbon-Free Fairfax,a broad greenhouse gas reduction initiative that enables county residents, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and other key stakeholders to decrease their greenhouse gas emissions through education, outreach, and engagement opportunities.
