This summer, nine BeFriend-A-Child mentees took part in a weeklong adventure in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. The mentees boldly stepped outside their comfort zone, explored the outdoors, and learned lifelong skills while attending the Northern Virginia 4-H camp.
The children, who were between 8-12 years old, participated in traditional and leadership camp activities such as canoeing, fishing, archery, arts and crafts, STEM activities, and much more! They also enjoyed the sheer fun of jumping and playing games in the pool.
The “campers” quickly adapted to being away from home. Their camp experience was enhanced by being in a cell phone free zone. One of the mentees, Wilbur, stated, “I was willing to be without a phone for week, and I had so much fun!” What a great way to start the summer break!
The lodging was semi-private with three-four campers in each room. Mentees, Uriel and Jaden, bunked together in Rectors Lodge where they learned about one another and built a friendship. A few other mentees, Victoria, Ana and Yoanna, stayed in Robinson Lodge and became great friends. All the campers created long-lasting memories and friendships regardless of their cabin assignments.
“This camp was a great opportunity for the campers to stretch and grow in new and unexpected ways,” said BeFriend Coordinator Paula Severiche. The mentees were happily surprised that the cafeteria food was so delicious. The campfires were a big hit, as they sang campfire songs, told stories, and got to relax under the night sky. Several campers have already asked to go again next summer since they had such a blast!
The 4-H camp provided opportunities to make new friends, interact with nature and problem solve. We are hoping to expand this program for more mentees to join in the fun next summer!
Thanks to everyone who made this possible, including India Person with the Virginia Cooperative Extension at Virginia Tech for all her support.
