As we head into colder weather season, many of us like to stay cozy at home. But staying active and social is the best way to avoid the winter doldrums, keep our minds sharp, and have some fun. It’s also the perfect time to focus on ourselves; to reignite a passion, master a new skill, or simply enjoy the satisfaction of learning again.
The Fairfax County Public School system has a robust and affordable Adult and Community Education program (FCPS ACE) that offers hundreds of fun and engaging classes in neighborhoods all over Northern Virginia. A yearly catalog of classes is sent to all households in Northern Virginia, or you can browse classes online any time at www.fcpsace.org.
Consider taking community-based classes that align with your interests. Learn how to master the flavors of French, Indian, or German cuisine through a hands-on cooking class. Get crafty and create holiday gifts or enrich your writing skills through thoughtfully guided writing courses. Meet other film enthusiasts through lively, in-person film discussion classes where movies come alive through engaging dialogue and thoughtful analysis. Or keep pace with your kids and grandkids by learning new computer technology. It’s never too late to be a cool kid.
Taking classes is about more than just learning a new skill, though. It’s about community and friendship. Each course brings together neighbors and peers who share similar interests, creating an atmosphere that’s welcoming and social. Many participants find that what begins as a class quickly becomes something deeper: friendships, support networks, and shared experiences that enrich daily life.
