Mahjongg is not only social and fun but playing it can provide cognitive and psychological benefits for older adults.

Walk into a community center, library, or neighborhood café these days and you just might hear it: the unmistakable click-clack of Mahjongg tiles, followed by laughter, storytelling, and the occasional triumphant shout of “Mah Jongg!”

American Mahjongg is enjoying a remarkable resurgence across the United States. While younger generations are discovering the game for the first time, many adults over 60 are rediscovering something even more meaningful: connection, community, and pure fun.

The National Mah Jongg League, founded in 1937, now reports more than 350,000 members nationwide, reflecting the game’s continued growth and renewed popularity.

But ask regular players why they love Mahjongg, and most won’t start by talking about strategy or winning hands. They’ll talk about the people.

Four players, sitting around a table, sharing conversation while building hands from colorful tiles. Players talk, tease, laugh, and celebrate each other’s victories. Weekly games often become treasured rituals – something to look forward to that brings structure, excitement, and friendship to the week.

For older adults especially, that sense of routine and belonging can be incredibly valuable. A recent scientific review examining dozens of studies found growing evidence that Mahjongg has cognitive and psychological benefits for older adults. Mahjongg strengthens memory, pattern recognition, decision-making, adaptability, and concentration. Players constantly evaluate possibilities, pivot strategies, and pay attention to what others are discarding.

In short: your brain stays busy.

Few activities combine the mental challenge, camaraderie, and laughter quite like Mahjongg. Many players say the game quickly evolves from “something to try” into a genuine social circle. And while new players may be intimidated at first glance, it takes just a few sessions to go from “I’ll never understand this” to eagerly organizing weekly games with friends.
