Older Americans and Adult Abuse Prevention Month Proclamation

Older Americans and Adult Abuse Prevention Month Proclamation
2026 Proclamation

WHEREAS, every May we recognize Older Americans Month, and this year’s theme, “Champion Your Health,” led by the Administration for Community Living, emphasizes prevention, wellness and personal responsibility, encouraging older adults to take an active role in managing their health, advocating for themselves, accessing preventive care and making informed decisions that support their well-being; and

WHEREAS, Older Americans Month is an opportunity to celebrate the strength and contributions of older adults and the aging network in Fairfax County, with emphasis on aging in place so older adults can remain in their homes, stay independent and continue to engage in their communities; and

WHEREAS, data from the Community Assessment Survey for Older Adults and the SHAPE the Future of Aging Plan indicate that many older adults face ongoing challenges to well-being, with 41 percent reporting limited engagement and 33 percent identifying loneliness and isolation as a concern, highlighting the importance of connection and access to resources; and

WHEREAS, May is also Adult Abuse Prevention Month in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and we recognize that some older adults are vulnerable and need protection from abuse, neglect and exploitation; and

WHEREAS, Fairfax County provides resources for older adults, caregivers and individuals with disabilities, including the Aging, Disability and Caregiver Resources Line, to support health, independence and safety; NOW THEREFORE

BE IT RESOLVED, that the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors hereby proclaims May 2026 as

OLDER AMERICANS AND ADULT ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH

in Fairfax County and urges all residents to recognize the contributions of older adults and support programs that promote wellness, inclusion, independence and protection.
