The LED Conversion Streetlight Program (LCSP), implemented in 2019, was designed to convert all antiquated Mercury Vapor (MV), High-Pressure Sodium Vapor (HPSV) and Metal-halide (MH) county streetlights to LED lighting technology in coordination with Dominion Energy Virginia (DE).
The conversion of DE streetlights to LED on public streets is close to completion for the majority of Fairfax County. Over 52,000 LED conversions have been completed to date - that’s over 92% of streetlights serviced by DE.
Streetlights within NOVEC service area are also transitioning to LED technology through traditional maintenance work and as resources allow.
LCSP also ensures lighting levels and LED fixture selections are sized to meet the adopted roadway lighting standard. The conversion of existing streetlights to LED, advances Fairfax County’s energy reduction goals and improves operational efficiency.
LED lights have environmental, safety, and cost benefits, such as:
- Last five times longer than incandescent lights
- Reduce energy consumption by 50-60%
- Reduce CO2 emission
- Reduce operational cost / saves money
- Require less maintenance
