Public Works and Environmental Services Alert:

Know Your Invasive Species Responsibilities

One example of an invasive species is Running Bamboo. This plant spreads quickly by its roots. It makes dense stands where nothing else can grow. If it crosses onto a neighbor’s property, it can create issues. Since January 2023, Fairfax County homeowners may be fined if bamboo is not removed or contained on their property.

Do not plant running bamboo. Learn how to spot, manage, and remove running bamboo to prevent issues for your yard and your neighbors. Information is available in multiple languages, including English, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Spanish, Urdu and Vietnamese.

Learn more about the damage it causes, how to contain, remove and dispose of Running Bamboo.

Invasive species can harm the environment if not managed properly. It's important to know the rules and follow them to help protect Fairfax County and the state of Virginia.

Some actions are against the law, while others require written permission.

Do not remove invasive species from property you don’t own unless you get clear permission. There are many ways to make a positive impact. Visit What You Can Do About Invasive Species for ideas and volunteer opportunities.

Invasive Plant Disposal

When you remove invasive plants, it’s important to dispose of them properly. Proper disposal stops them from spreading or harming collection crews.

Bag Them Up

  • Put debris from invasive plants, or diseased and harmful plants, into plastic bags.
  • Write a label or add a sign so it’s clear the bag is trash and not yard waste.
  • Place the bags with regular trash, not in yard waste collection.

No Dumping!

  • Never dump yard waste in natural areas. This can spread invasive plants and hurt new plants trying to grow.
Weed Out Invasives

Fairfax County Parks

The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) encourages volunteers to help remove invasive plants on FCPA property. Volunteers must follow certain rules.

  • Policy Manual
Read the 2023 Policy Manual, especially Policy 208, for details on protecting park land and facilities.
  • Invasive Management Area (IMA) Program
The program organizes volunteers to help remove invasive plants. Check out the Volunteer Calendar to join in.
  • Group Events
You can request group events for invasive plant removal by emailing parkmail@fairfaxcounty.gov.

Tree Conservation

To protect trees, Fairfax County follows the Public Facilities Manual. The manual explains the rules for managing trees during construction and land development. You can look at these rules in Chapter 12 of the Public Facilities Manual.

Protect The Chesapeake Bay

  • Removing plants, grass, or groundcover, is considered land disturbance and is regulated by the state and county.
  • If you disturb more than 2,500 square feet, you must follow the Erosion and Stormwater Management Ordinance requirements. These are found in Chapter 124.1 of Fairfax County Code.
  • You need permission before removing non-native, invasive plants in a protected area called the Resource Protection Area (RPA). This rule applies no matter how small the area is.
  • Want to learn what land disturbance means? Visit Land Disturbance 101.
  • To find out how to get permission and learn more about RPAs, visit Chesapeake Bay Preservation Ordinance.

State Laws About Wildlife and Fish

Virginia has specific laws to protect against harmful and/or nuisance wildlife and fish issues. These can be found in the Virginia Administrative Code.

  • Nuisance species designated.
  • Permit required to import, liberate or possess predatory or undesirable animals or birds.
  • Importation requirements, possession, and sale of nonnative (exotic) animals.
  • Taking aquatic invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, and nongame fish for private use.
