The stream stabilization and restoration project was initially scoped in 2017 and was authorized for design for fiscal year 2025 under the stormwater capital projects work plan. The project corridor extends approximately 1,600 linear feet and traverses approximately seven HOA properties and residential areas within the Difficult Run Watershed in Vienna.
Previous stream assessments identified general channel instability, streambank erosion, sediment transport, localized head cuts, degraded riparian conditions, and limited floodplain connectivity throughout the project corridor. The assessments also documented infrastructure concerns, including sanitary sewer crossings adjacent to and beneath the stream channel and an exposed sanitary sewer manhole within the project area.
Restoration of approximately 1,600 linear feet of stream channel and one stormwater detention basin located in the Providence Magisterial District and within the Difficult Run Watershed in Vienna. The project extends approximately 1,600 linear feet from the stormwater detention basin, 1098DP, across multiple private properties until it reaches Wolftrap Road. The stream assessment has identified channel instability, stream bank erosion, sediment transport, and limited floodplain connectivity throughout the project area.

The stream restoration project is located to the east of Bryd Road and Hunt Valley Drive and to the west of Lord Fairfax Road. The stream restoration starts at the south end of Kentsdale Lane and extends south to Wolftrap Road.
Design Phase.
Evidence of active sediment transport and ongoing channel instability.
Exposed sanitary sewer manhole within the stream channel because of channel incision and bank erosion.
We plan to host a public meeting on Summer 2026 to inform the community about the project purpose, anticipated benefits, and design approach.
As the project advances through the design development process, public meetings will be scheduled to update the community on the design and to receive feedback.
The design of Wolftrap Creek at Wolftrap Road & 1098DP Basin Retrofit project is funded for $665,000.00. Construction funding is dependent upon future budget availability and allocations. Stormwater projects are funded through the county Stormwater Service District.
