Transforming Tysons

By 2050, the plan is for Tysons to have evolved into a 24-hour urban center that will be home to 100,000 residents and 200,000 jobs. Creating a livable Tysons will require a new way of thinking about travel, commuting, leisure and more. Fairfax County is making progress to prioritize the needs of pedestrians, bicyclists and transit users to ensure this growing urban core accommodates residents, commuters and visitors alike. Details on various projects and studies can be found at the resources below:

Current Tysons Projects

Route 7 Widening - Route 123 to I-495:

  • Two new lanes in the median for future BRT, widen roadway to outside to preserve 6-lane section
  • Route 7 widening study is being coordinated with the BRT study
  • BRT final recommendations approved by Board of Supervisors in July 2021
  • Staff recommends allocating $7.8 million in service district revenues to fully fund design 

Route 7 Widening - I-495 to I-66:

  • Route 7 BRT alignment was approved by BOS in July 2021
  • Planning work is underway including BRT lanes
  • $10.5 million in service district funds approved for design and land acquisition

Ramps from Greensboro Drive to Dulles Toll Road:

  • Study began January 2021, to be completed in Summer 2024
  • Will include 15% design for recommended ramps
  • $1 million in service district funds approved for study/engineering

Route 123 Modified Intersection Treatment (I-495 to the Dulles Connector Road)

  • Multiple options being considered and evaluated including Super Street Option selected in the previous study, Cleveland Ramp and various roadway improvements

Route 123 Modified Intersection Treatment (I-495 to International Drive)

  • Multiple options being considered and evaluated including the Comprehensive Plan recommendation and various roadway improvements

Both Project: 

  • Analysis of Future Conditions: Completed
  • Analysis of Preferred Alternative: Completed
  • Additional Mitigation Measures Evaluation: Completed
  • Final recommendation and Phasing Analyses: Study was completed in summer 2023 and is pending public outreach.

Tysons 7B Projects

The TMSAMS projects focus on transit, bicycle, and pedestrian improvement projects to enhance access to the Metrorail Stations in Tysons:

  • As of June 2024, 41 of the 42 projects are complete.

Current Projects: 

  1. Ashgrove Lane Trail - 10-foot wide asphalt trail from Ashgrove Plantation Trail to Westwood Center Drive

The Comprehensive Roadside Management Program (CRMP), established in 2004, is administered by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to improve the appearance and safety of state-maintained right-of-way through the development, establishment and maintenance of landscaping activities. The Fairfax County Department of Transportation, in partnership with the Tysons Community Alliance (TCA), is working to bring CRMP to various locations around Tysons, which would mark the first use of CRMP in the Northern Virginia region.

 

CRMP Pilot in Tysons

TCA initiated the effort to pilot the CRMP in Fairfax County, with landscaping plans for four proposed sites in Tysons. The plans include:

  • Removal of invasive plant species
  • Installation of native plantings
  • Landscape enhancements
  • Long-term maintenance commitments

TCA will recruit sponsors to fund the improvement and would be responsible for providing ongoing maintenance for the proposed sites.
 

Project Goals

The goals of this initiative include:

  • Improve the visual appearance of Tysons
  • Create well-managed and sustainable landscapes
  • Enhance the safety and experience for pedestrians and bicyclists using adjacent paths and sidewalks
     

Timeline                                                

  • The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors authorized a public hearing to review the program and proposed landscaping activities on Feb. 3, 2026
  • The public hearing will be held on March 3, 2026. Members of the public are invited to comment on the initiative and the Board of
  • Supervisors will consider adopting a formal resolution endorsing the program and proposed landscaping activities.
  • If approved by the Board, TCA will work to establish sponsorships for the proposed sites
  • As sponsorship is secured, FCDOT will submit the required application materials to VDOT for review and permitting
  • If approved by VDOT, TCA may begin work at sites that have secured sponsorship. 
     

Resources

Silver Line Extension:

  • A 23-mile Metrorail extension connects Tysons West, Reston, Herndon, and the Dulles Airport areas of Fairfax County

Tysons Fire Station/Transit West Center:

  • Redevelopment of the fire station on Jones Branch Drive to include a five-bay fire station and seven-bay bus transit facility
  • Includes new access to Dulles Roll Road
  • Total project estimate is $20,000,000
  • Design is underway

Current Studies

Envision Route 7 Northern Virginia Transportation Commission (NVTC)

Assessment of Travel needs within the Route 7 corridor between Tysons and the City of Alexandria.

  • County studying how the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) will function in Tysons, Route 7 to Mark Center in Alexandria 
  • Ongoing Engagement with Key Partners: DRPT, FTA, VDOT, MWCOG, NVTA, and NVTC Jurisdictions
  • Winter 2024: Award Contract for Phase 4-2 Analysis
  • Winter 2024: Integrate Bus Priority Treatments in jurisdiction planning efforts

Route 7 BRT Study Fairfax County 

Analysis of 2030 traffic impacts and potential mitigation measures for intersections in the neighborhoods surrounding Tysons.

Projects Advancing

Lewinsville Road and Spring Hill Road:

  • Finalizing detailed traffic comparison analysis of Offset T-Intersection and conventional intersection
  • The Offset-T Intersection option was determined to be the preferred alternative
  • Project is on hold pending implementation of a proposed Offset-T intersection at Old Dominion Drive and Balls Hill Road
  • Offset-T option may be reevaluated based on community response to Old Dominion Drive and Balls Hill Road project

Balls Hill Road and Old Dominion Drive:

The 90% design was completed in August 2024.

  • Land Acquisition: Begin Winter 2024 – End Fall 2025 
  • Utility Relocation: Begin Fall 2025 – End Spring 2027
  • Begin Construction: Spring 2027
  • Construction Completion: Fall 2028

  • A survey concerning mitigation measures was conducted during Summer 2019
  • Meetings were held with the District Supervisor in February and December 2020, October 2021, and February 2022
