In February, the BeFriend-A-Child mentors and mentees had a great time dishing up some yummy recipes together. Homemade vanilla ice cream and tortilla character wraps were as fun to make as they were to eat!
Instructors with Cookology Recreational Culinary School led this experimental cooking class. The kids learned principles of basic chemistry, physics, and biology using common kitchen items. They explored the physical changes that happen when making recipes and experienced how to use their own energy to turn milk and sugar into ice cream in just five minutes!
The kids couldn’t resist topping off their ice cream with some sprinkles and eating the frozen treat right out of the bag. It was a great way to learn that science can be fun!
Next the mentors and mentees created silly “tortilla face” wraps using hummus, deli meats, and healthy veggies like tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and avocados.
Everyone used their imaginations to decorate their tortillas with the ingredients. They channeled their inner artists to create lion and cat faces, butterflies, flowers, and silly human faces, just to name a few.
This event certainly lived up to the Cookology motto, “Inspiring people to connect through food.” Mentors and mentees connected through the fun they had, and the BAC coordinators made sure to pass on the recipes to the mentees’ families, so they can share the fun of good nutrition together at home.
