Two programs within Fairfax County’s Department of Family Services and Health Department recently worked together to host a new outreach program, a community “baby shower.” The Baby Extravaganza, planned by DFS’s Healthy Families Fairfax and the HD’s Nurse Family Partnership, was held at The Gerry Hyland Government Center to be easily accessible for expectant mothers in the South County region of Fairfax County.
On the morning of October 23, the Department of Family Services and the Health Department showcased their services for new and expectant mothers. There were presentations on maternal health, safe sleep, and nutrition. Community partners and other agencies provided resources for families. Parents had an opportunity to receive necessities such as pack and play cribs, baby boxes, diapers, clothing, and other baby items generously donated by Volunteer and Partner Services’ partner organizations within Fairfax County. Check out this video recap of the event.
When Rebecca Peek heard that Healthy Families Fairfax was hosting a baby shower for the mothers in its program, she jumped at the chance to make her signature baby boxes complete with adorable crocheted stuffed animals. Rebecca Peek is the go-to VPS baby box maker. This year alone, Rebecca has donated over 73 baby boxes, and that doesn’t include the stuffed animals she crochets by hand, or the gift cards she contributes to vulnerable families in need.
Not only is Rebecca a longstanding donor and partner, but she is also a Fairfax County employee with the Infant Toddler Connection. Supporting VPS allows her to fuse her professional expertise in infant development with her hobbies. Both VPS and Healthy Families Fairfax are so thankful for recurring donors like Rebecca who impact our community.
If you are interested in making a baby box, or have a child who would like to earn volunteer service hours by making baby boxes, please email DFS-VPSProgram@fairfaxcounty.gov to find out more!
