Back-to-School and Diaper Drives Provide Supplies for Hundreds of Children Involved with Family Services

Every year Volunteer & Partner Services runs a back-to-school backpack and school supply drive. In 2020, with the switch to virtual classes for school children, the needs for their school supplies also changed. As a result, we shifted to collecting gift cards that families could use to purchase their own supplies.

Given last year’s success, this year, we began a hybrid version of the Back-to-School Drive. Starting in July 2021, we connected with different donors in the community to not only collect backpacks filled with supplies, but also gift cards for older students and additional supplies. Thus far we have collected 660 backpacks filled with school supplies, thanks to Touching Heart and Camp Christmas in July. We also have received 115 gift cards and additional school supplies donated by Alice’s Kids, Tim Barber, Yeman Demissew, Rachel Gwilliam, Krishna Neelarambam, Kristin Tomgarn, Jackie Hess and more!  See the details below.

Touching Heart Kids on a Mission

The Touching Heart Kids on a Mission program worked to supply these much-needed items to students who may not be able to prepare for going back to class. The team leading this effort consisted of kids who all live in the same neighborhood and who have a passion to help others.

These young people set a goal of loading 100 backpacks full of school supplies. They reached out to family, friends, local businesses and corporations for sponsorships and donations of new school supplies. After collecting monetary donations and purchasing all of the supplies, the young team spent hours filling the backpacks. Their hard work and efforts paid off; they were able to donate nearly 160 backpacks full of school supplies!

Alice’s Kids

Living in a middle class neighborhood, they suffered the stigma of being labeled “those welfare kids.” Alice worked hard to pick up extra cash to supplement the welfare check, and the kids still remember the joy and pride they felt when Alice was able to take them shopping for new clothes.

Whether it meant getting a new baseball glove or the required gym uniform, in the grand scheme of things, these items were not as important as food and shelter, but these little extras lifted their spirits and made them feel more “normal” among their classmates. As always, DFS is extremely grateful for our continuous work together with Alice’s Kids, and this year we are even more thankful for their very generous donation of $5,000 worth of contributions which provided school supplies for 100 students.

Camp Christmas in July Sponsors “Christmas is Not Cancelled”

Staff from our DFS Children, Youth and Families Division joined with hundreds of community volunteers on Thursday, July 29, to ensure children in foster care are ready for the upcoming school year.

This “Christmas is Not Cancelled,” event was coordinated by Comfort Cases at their offices in Rockville. They provided backpacks, school supplies and other necessities, and volunteers worked together to fill each of the 2,400 backpacks. Comfort Cases donated 500 filled backpacks for children involved with Fairfax CYF. Our Volunteer & Partner Services  program is coordinating distribution of these backpacks to children and families on our end.

LiveWell Diaper Drive

LiveWell and the Department of Family Services teamed up to tackle the diaper insecurity in our community. During the month of July, LiveWell collected items such as diapers, wipes, and creams.

With the generous support of our employees and retirees, LiveWell has been able to donate over 2,060 diapers, 2,068 wipes, and seven bottles of ointment and cream. The goal at LiveWell is to empower, educate, and engage Fairfax County employees and retirees to make life-long choices that promote total wellbeing, including building our community up.
