Lifetime learning is a fun, interactive way to continue growing - no matter what your age! And, during the pandemic, a great way to experience learning is to virtually visit one of NOVA Lifetime Learning Institute’s monthly fall forums at no cost.

The NOVA Lifetime Learning Institute (LLI/NOVA) is a nonprofit, member-run organization dedicated to providing continuing educational opportunities for older adults of all backgrounds and income levels. In addition to free monthly forums, the institute currently has a series of events underway to celebrate its 25th year serving the local community.

The free monthly Zoom forums are offered to members and nonmembers alike and are always on a Wednesday. Learn more about joining sessions. Forums begin at 10 a.m.

According to Anna Dixon, LLI/NOVA president, “We think attending a virtual forum is a good way to get to know us better, and if you like what you see, perhaps you’ll even sign up for a class.” All classes, special interest groups, and many day trips are included in its annual membership fee of $110.

Past forum speakers have included authors, ambassadors, television personalities, newspaper reporters, sports officials and even LLI/NOVA members who have special skills and interests. This fall another broad set of speakers are lined up.

According to Dixon, the social aspect of the gatherings is just as important as the speaker’s topic - even if it’s done virtually. Dixon adds, “There is a short question and answer period after the speaker has finished to provide more interaction among participants.”

Here is the lineup for LLI/NOVA’s Fall Forums:

Anne M. KressWednesday, Sept. 2, Anne M. Kress, Ph.D., president of Northern Virginia Community College, kicks off the program year. She will share insights on her varied career and how she is shepherding the college - the nation’s second largest community college with 90,000 students - toward success in today’s labor market.

Michelle MargeotesWednesday, Oct. 7, Michelle Margeotes, Fairfax County Consumer Affairs. Learn helpful information and tips on how citizens can protect themselves. You’ll also learn about other Fairfax County government resources available to address complaints.

Robert G. TemplinWednesday, Nov. 4, Robert G. Templin, Jr., Ed.D., Aspen Institute. Templin will give an overview of the institute and also provide insights on its dedication to cultivate leaders through an extraordinary credential program.
