Welcome to Caring Community Updates 2024 news and articles about our volunteers in action!
A Towel-rific Holiday
(posted December 2024)
We’re excited to share that we’ve had a successful 2024 Holiday Project, and the bags have been received with deep appreciation by the Department of Family Services clients. A huge “thank you” to all the generous donors who contributed 250 towels and numerous other supplies, bringing much-needed cheer to our community members!
Volunteer Solutions also extends our heartfelt gratitude to our volunteers, who’ve been delivering these bags, and to those whose ribbon-tying and packing help was invaluable. Thank you to those who wrote handmade cards, and to the Northern VA Handcrafters Guild for their donation of handmade tissue holders and to Fairfax Pets on Wheels for being instrumental in providing pet items for clients with dogs and cats.
Each of you has played an integral role in spreading joy and serving as a warm reminder that our community truly cares for one another!
A Warm and Cozy Virtual Celebration
(posted December 2024)
Volunteer Solutions staff enjoyed hosting a virtual Hot Chocolate Social, on December 11, 2024, from 1 to 2pm. Volunteers who registered far enough ahead received hot chocolate packets from us in the mail and had the option to make themselves a cup for the online festivity. We celebrated by sharing the heartwarming ways people give back during the holidays and throughout the year. It was wonderful to hear from our VS volunteers and learn about their special volunteering highlights! We’ve included some of the examples here. We wish we could include them all, but please know that if you’re actively doing something to help someone in our community, we appreciate you!
2024 Venture into Volunteering
(Posted November 2024)
We’re thrilled to share that for the second consecutive year, Volunteer Solutions was honored to partner with The Beacon 50+ Expo and hosted the Venture into Volunteering fair at the Springfield Town Center on Sunday, November 3, 2024. This year’s event welcomed over 800 participants who explored a wide variety of local organizations seeking volunteers. Attendees not only discovered valuable resources for older adults, but they also learned how they can make a meaningful impact in our community through volunteering. Thank you to all who attended and to our Volunteer Solutions volunteers who supported this event! If you missed this year’s Venture into Volunteering or didn’t get the chance to tell your friends about it, don’t worry. Check out the list of local organizations that are looking for volunteers of all ages. Scroll through and discover opportunities that align with your interest and spark your passion. Happy volunteering!
Building Connections
(Posted October 2024)
We are grateful for the many ways in which VS volunteers help increase social connectivity for older adults in our community, who are clients of the Fairfax County Department of Family Services. Our volunteers positively impact feelings of social isolation by engaging in weekly visits as social visitors, by driving others on errands and appointments, or by assisting with special short-term delivery or home improvement projects, and helping others be better connected via technology.
Touring Fairfax Co. Senior Centers
(Posted September 2024)
Did you know September is National Senior Center month? There are 13 Fairfax County senior center locations where older adults go to learn a new skill, pursue creative interests, stay active, and meet others. Volunteer Solutions staff and volunteers visited Hollin Hall, Little River Glen and Lincolnia senior centers during our September Connection Corner meetings. Senior Centers are a wonderful place to share your talents. We have volunteers who lead line-dancing and fitness classes, troubleshoot computer problems, instruct others on how to make art, play the piano, speak other languages, and much more. If you’re interested in getting a tour of your local senior center, stop in and ask for one. Learn more about the centers. If you have a skill you’d like to share, reach out to your assigned Volunteer Solutions Regional Volunteer Coordinator. If you haven’t yet registered to become a VS volunteer, and would like to, please email VolunteerSolutions@FairfaxCounty.gov.
Exploring the Dimensions of Aging
(Posted September 2024)
Older adults experience challenges and frustrations that can be difficult to understand, even if you work with older people, or are a caregiver, family member, neighbor, or friend. A new training series is being offered and facilitated by ElderLink, a partnership program between the Fairfax Area Agency on Aging and Inova. This “Exploring the Dimensions of Aging through Virtual Reality” initiative allows participants to “see through the eyes” of older adults to better understand what it is like for them to encounter various challenges in daily life.
VS volunteers were fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in this innovative experience at the Connection Corner and Community Ambassador meetings. If you missed those, the free 75-minute, facilitated, virtual sessions are held via Microsoft Teams and utilize virtual reality simulations developed by Embodied Labs to highlight challenges commonly faced by older adults. It’s open to anyone in the community to register online for Exploring Dimensions of Aging Labs.
Pawsitive Contributions
(Posted August 2024)
Did you know that 66% of US households own a pet? Volunteer Solutions (VS) is not only thankful for how Laura Pageon serves our community as a VS volunteer, but for the time she took to give an informative presentation on pets at our virtual Connection Corner (CC) on Thursday, August 15, 2024. Laura is a board-certified veterinarian who serves as a veterinary pathologist and used to practice as a clinical vet, too. She studies and diagnoses diseases in animals and has taught vet students as well. During the CC gathering, Laura highlighted the ways in which pets can enhance the well-being of their owners, and vice versa, and important factors to consider while exploring the possibility of adopting a pet.
The CC meeting participants also shared their live pets and animatronic ones. It was an uplifting, smile-filled activity.
If you or someone you know have an area of expertise you think would be of interest to share with others at a future Connection Corner meeting, please email your Regional Volunteer Coordinator or VolunteerSolutions@FairfaxCounty.gov. Laura is pictured here with her furry family members, Amie and Acia.
Volunteer Spotlight - George Bishop
(Posted July 2024)
Volunteer spotlights are wonderful opportunities to learn more about who our volunteers are, what they feel passionate about and how their life’s journey led them to Volunteer Solutions (VS). We learned that accomplished artist and longtime VS volunteer, George Bishop, has a colorful background, literally and figuratively. Learn more about George, his passion for art and volunteering, and his pioneering career in technology.
Community Ambassadors’ Meeting at the Emergency Operations Center
(Posted June 2024)
On Monday, June 10, 2024, Community Ambassadors (CA) and other active VS volunteers had a unique opportunity to attend the quarterly CA meeting at the Fairfax County Emergency Operations center. Moriah Kitaeff of the Department of Emergency Management and Security (DEMS) shared about the importance of developing an emergency plan, resources available during and after a disaster, and what to consider and practice in different types of emergency situations. They learned how to stay informed ahead of and during a disaster and toured the 911 Call Center.
Thank you to all CAs who help educate others about resources! Learn more about this volunteer role or register to become a CA.
Fairfax Pets on Wheels Picnic
(Posted June 2024)
The annual Fairfax Pets on Wheels (FPOW) picnic was held on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at Frying Pan Park in Herndon, VA. Many volunteers attended with their ever-adorable canine companions. Nadia Hoonan, Volunteer Solutions’ Partnership Coordinator, also participated in the festivities. A professional photographer was there creating photos, which are used for the Pet Pals trading cards that are given to long-term care residents during visits.
We are grateful for the joy these volunteers, both human and furry, provide to long-term care residents! To learn more and register to volunteer, go to FPOW.org.
Every May, in honor of Older Americans month, our Helping Hands volunteers, partners, and VS staff take on various projects to help older adults in our community. Services range from indoor decluttering, organizing, donating items, to trimming bushes and yard work to improve accessibility, and more. Groups range in size depending on the scope of work needed. Helping Hands recipients are Fairfax County Department of Family Services clients who meet functional and income requirements and receive case management services.
A huge “thank you” to all the Helping Hands volunteers who helped improve indoor and outdoor spaces! The recipients are very grateful, too.
Floral Arrangements Brought Smiles
(Posted May 2024)
A hearty “thank you” to our volunteer drivers and the Yacht Haven Garden Club (YHGC)! The YHGC members created many beautiful flower arrangements for the Department of Family Services' Adult & Aging clients in the Falls Church and Annandale region. Trader Joe's donated most of the flowers and YHGC covered the rest, including materials.
The Yacht Haven Garden Club -whose members are from the greater Mount Vernon area- has been meeting for more than 60 years. It supports the National Garden Club, and National Capital Area Garden Club (NCAGC) projects, such as horticulture scholarships, as well as gardening at the Sherwood Hall Library and neighborhood entrance markers, holiday decorating at the Mount Vernon Yacht Club, and more. Over the years, this group has also contributed to the historical preservation of sites, such as Woodlawn Plantation, Gunston Hall, the American Horticulture Society, and others.
Many older adults were smiling due to the cheerful bouquets which were delivered on May 23, 2024. One volunteer noted how, “Appreciative and pleasantly surprised (bordering on shocked) the clients were upon receiving their flowers. One was brought to tears; another's face lit up and was speechless, and another wanted to find some way to repay the kindness.” Kudos to all involved!
2024 National Volunteer Week Lunch Celebration
(Posted April 2024)
During National Volunteer Week, Volunteer Solutions was thrilled to host a tropical getaway celebration to honor and thank our invaluable volunteers, on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at James Lee Community Center in Falls Church. We provided Caribbean-inspired food, presentations, games, a photo station, awards, assorted raffle prizes and a chance for people to connect. Beautiful smiles abounded and new memories were created.
We thank South Block for their support towards our prizes.
Volunteer Spotlight – Julie Brown
(Posted April 2024)
We are grateful for our volunteer SAIL fitness instructor, Julie Brown, and her commitment to improving the health of older adults in our community.
Ana Diaz (Assistant Director at Lewinsville Senior Center) raved, “The participants fall in love with Julie’s welcoming, friendly, and easygoing personality. She goes beyond the volunteer instructor role, ensuring members are enjoying the class with peers and meeting their individual goals.”
2024 Star Partner Award - Rotary Club of Bailey’s Crossroads
(Posted April 2024)
Volunteer Solutions selected the Rotary Club of Bailey’s Crossroads as our 2024 Star Partner Awardee. This philanthropic group has contributed their time, efforts, and financial contributions to the annual Fairfax County Department of Family Services Adult & Aging division’s holiday project since its inception in 2011. They’ve been instrumental in helping us bring holiday cheer during a season that can be lonely for many, especially those who are socially isolated. Holiday gifts, including donated gift cards, various hygiene items, crafts, emergency kits, winter home goods, and more, have been met with gratitude from the recipients.
Nadia Hoonan, Volunteer Solutions Partnership Coordinator, presented the award to Juanita Ballenger, President of the Rotary Club of Bailey’s Crossroads. Juanita also spoke about how meaningful this long-term collaboration has been for the club members as well.
Volunteer Solutions extends our deepest thanks to the Rotary Club of Bailey’s Crossroads for their cherished, ongoing partnership!
2024 South County Star Award Recipient –Trinh Nguyen
(Posted April 2024)
In the past year alone, Trinh Nguyen has served in 11 different Volunteer Solutions opportunities! She's been active in one-time tasks and ongoing roles. During our holiday blanket drive, she brought 30+ blankets she had collected with the help of her family and community. Her sister, Bach, has also been helpful in supporting the community, as well as Trinh's son. Trinh and her sister teamed up to help declutter an elderly woman's home, and Trinh has continued to remove and take items for donation nearly every week.
Emily Swenson, Volunteer Solutions supervisor says, "Are you looking for a shift in your perspective for the day? Meet Trinh and you’re sure to be energized by her glowing demeanor and peppy “can do” attitude. When asked to help, she thinks ahead, shows up early and corrals others to meet the need, with a huge smile. She cares deeply for older adults in our community."
Congratulations, and thank you, Trinh!
2024 Northeastern Region Star Award Recipient – Scott McDaniel
(Posted April 2024)
Scott McDaniel is passionate about his craft and has been teaching pottery and ceramics classes at James Lee Senior Center during the past two years. He patiently guides students through the steps, providing support and encouraging them to participate fully in the process from molding, to glazing, to firing in the kilns at the center. Scott improves quality of life for older adults by providing opportunities for them to express their creativity in new ways.
Participants and staff have expressed high praise and gratitude for him.
We are all thankful that he’s sharing his passion and talents. Congratulations, and thank you, Scott!
2024 Northwestern & Central Region Star Award Recipients – Tracy Griggs & Daphne Yang
(Posted April 2024)
We appreciate all our volunteers for the myriad ways they help our community. Each year, during National Volunteer Week, we take the opportunity to give an award to one volunteer per region.
This year, however, the Star Award goes to two volunteers in the Northwestern & Central region. Tracy Griggs and Daphne Yang have contributed to many types of tasks over the last 5+years, including several delivery tasks and multiple household tasks. Not only have they helped many in our community over the years, but they were nominated as a duo due to a particular project in late 2023. Through strategic, efficient teamwork, they helped an older adult feel significantly better about her very cluttered living environment.
Both volunteers have boundless energy, compassion, and a can-do spirit which uplifts everyone they assist. We are grateful to have their assistance.
Congratulations, and thank you, Tracy, and Daphne!

2024 Mental Health for Older Adults Training
(Posted April 2024)
Volunteer Solutions appreciates the full-day, in-person, training sessions which have been provided to our volunteers by the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB), over the past several years. Many thanks to Lori Naveda and Claudia Bravo for teaching a group of our volunteers the Mental Health for Older Adults curriculum, on Thursday, March 14, in the South County Center in Alexandria. “Thank you” to our volunteers who attended, and learned about how to help someone experiencing a mental health problem or crisis, until the appropriate professional care can be obtained, or until the crisis has passed.
Check out this link to find out more about the various online, virtual trainings the CSB provides to the community.
Flowers Lifted Spirits
(Posted March 2024)
The skies may have appeared dreary on this February day, but our volunteers were smiling and eager to bring these uplifting splashes of color to older adults in the Alexandria region! For the second year in a row, The Garden Club of Waynewood generously arranged and donated floral arrangements for clients of the Dept. of Family Services. Trader Joe’s donated the blooms, and the garden club covered the rest.
A huge “thank you” to our community partners and to all the volunteers who participated as delivery drivers and card writers! Handmade cards were included with the floral bouquets. A volunteer remarked, “The flowers are such a nice idea to brighten someone’s day and the cards are an added bonus. Happy to help.”
Spreading the Love with Handmade Cards
(Posted March 2024)
Older adult clients of the Dept. of Family Services were feeling the love in February! Hundreds of cards were created by volunteers of all ages, including those in Volunteer Solutions, Troops 54084 and 1345G, and RSVP-NOVA volunteers who participated in the Volunteer Fairfax Give Together event.
Thank you to all who took the time to remind others that people care!
Community Outreach Events
(Posted February 2024)
The Adult and Aging Services program - in the Department of Family Services- receives requests throughout the year to attend various types of community events and share helpful information with the public. Volunteer Solutions (VS) staff and volunteers are often at these local fairs, sharing resource pamphlets and flyers with those who stop by the tables. Pictured here are Adult and Aging staff, Jeannine Purdy (VS Regional Volunteer Coordinator, in the cream shirt) and Becky Mitchell, with outreach volunteers- Peter Cacioppo and Kay Croll, at Mount Vernon’s annual town meeting in February 2024.
Thank you, Kay and Peter, and our outreach volunteers who help us keep the community informed on many wonderful resources! We would welcome and appreciate more volunteers who can help us at weekend or weekday events. It’s a flexible opportunity. If you’re a VS volunteer, are friendly and engaging, and would like to help with outreach fairs, either by staffing a table, and/or distributing flyers at local businesses, announcing special events like our annual Venture into Volunteering fair, please email Tanya Erway.
ADCR and Connection Corners
(Posted January 2024)
To kick off 2024 in the best way possible, we welcomed Karen Hannigan, the supervisor of the Department of Family Services’ Aging Disability Caregiver Resources Unit (ADCR) as our speaker for the January Connection Corner meeting. ADCR can be accessed online or by calling (703) 324-7948, TTY 711. Karen gave a thorough overview of this must-answer line, which is staffed by social workers Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The ADCR team is the “front door” to a variety of services and responds to approximately 20,000 calls or inquiries per year.
If you are a Volunteer Solutions (VS) volunteer and would like to watch the recording of Karen’s presentation, please email your Regional Volunteer Coordinator (RVC) for the link. If you’d like to attend a future Connection Corner meeting, keep an eye on the emails you receive from Volunteer Solutions. These virtual gatherings are held once per month and provide a forum for volunteers to connect and learn about topics relevant to Adult & Aging Services. Active VS volunteers are always welcome to register and attend.
