Mount Vernon District Arts Advisory Council

About the Council

The Faces of One Art Installation along Richmond Highway

In 2025, the Mount Vernon District established the Mount Vernon District Arts Advisory Council to support and strengthen the arts across the community.

The Council’s mission is to promote and cultivate the arts in the Mount Vernon District by encouraging collaboration, supporting local artists and cultural organizations, and helping expand access to arts experiences for residents of all ages.

Through partnerships with community organizations, arts institutions, and local leaders, the Council works to highlight the role of the arts in strengthening community connection, creativity, and cultural vitality.

Upcoming Council Events

On February 24, the MVDAAC met for their first community meeting and social at the Workhouse Arts Center. The next meeting will be May 11 at Sherwood Regional Library.

Projects

A Free Little Art Gallery (FLAG) is coming to the Moe's Parklet, kicking off what will be many more boxes along the corridor!

The FLAG will be installed by Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation (SFDC) on April 8 in the Mount Vernon Plaza Parklete (7698 Richmond Highway) in Hybla Valley.

What is a FLAG?

FLAGs or Free Little Art Galleries are similar to the Free Little Libraries initiative, FLAGs encourage community members to create works of art that can be shared with the community through miniature galleries located in front of homes, stores, schools, and pedestrian areas.

Faces of 1 is a unique public art project, created by Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation, that brings the stories of our community to life along Richmond Highway. This series of sculptures, crafted byThe Faces of 1 Logo with colorful faces and the Route 1 sign. acclaimed artist Michael Alfano, celebrates the people, resilience and diversity of Southeast Fairfax. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, we invite you to connect with the art, the history, and the heart of our community. Explore the map on SFDC's webpage to find the sculptures along the corridor.

Council Members

The Mount Vernon District Arts Advisory Council is made up of community members who bring diverse experience in the arts, education, cultural leadership, and community engagement.

Together, the Council works to support the growth of the arts in the Mount Vernon District and help identify opportunities that strengthen the local creative community.

Council Leadership

Cathy Hosek — Co-Chair

Cathy Hosek serves as Co-Chair of the Mount Vernon District Arts Advisory Council and is a passionate advocate for strengthening the connection between schools, the arts, and the broader community. Recognized as the Mount Vernon District Community Champion at the 2024 Volunteer Fairfax Volunteer Service Awards, Cathy has long been known for her dedication to service and her commitment to ensuring that every member of the community feels included and supported.

A tireless volunteer and leader, Cathy works to bring people together—knitting partnerships between schools, community organizations, and residents to create opportunities that benefit students and families throughout the Mount Vernon area. Her work reflects a deep belief in the power of collaboration, creativity, and civic engagement to build stronger communities.

Through her leadership and advocacy, Cathy empowers others to get involved, fosters positive change, and sets an inspiring example of service for those around her. Her decades-long commitment to volunteerism and community well-being continues to make a lasting impact across the Mount Vernon District.

Lorena Saavedra Smith — Co-Chair

Lorena Saavedra Smith is a poet, author of Awaken Your Roots, ecopsychologist, and cultural consultant. Originally from Perú, she brings a bicultural perspective to her work in arts, culture, and community engagement.

Her work integrates storytelling, nature, and cultural identity to support community wellbeing and meaningful participation in the arts. She has experience collaborating with nonprofit and cultural organizations, with a focus on expanding access, strengthening community voice, and creating spaces where diverse experiences are recognized and represented.

As Co-Chair of the Mount Vernon District Arts Advisory Council, Lorena works to help shape an inclusive and visible arts ecosystem, connecting artists, residents, organizations, and local leadership across the district. She is also the wife of a retired U.S. Navy veteran.
