Special Response Unit

The Special Response Unit is made up of specialized teams that step in when a situation goes beyond routine patrol work. Whether the call involves explosive devices, an emergency on Fairfax County’s waterways, or a search beneath the surface, these units combine advanced training, specialized equipment, and rapid response to protect the public, recover evidence, and keep the community safe.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit handles situations involving explosives and other dangerous devices. Their job is to prevent explosions, protect lives, and safely neutralize threats.

Core Responsibilities

Responding to Bomb Threats

When someone reports a suspicious package or calls in a threat, the bomb squad investigates. They assess whether it's credible and determine the level of danger.

Identifying Explosive Devices

They examine suspicious items to figure out what they are, anything from homemade explosives to military-grade ordnance. Bomb squads rely heavily on specialized gear to reduce risk:

  • Robots to approach and inspect devices remotely
  • Portable X-ray systems to see inside suspicious packages
  • Bomb suits that provide blast and fragmentation protection
  • Disruptors (tools that disable devices, often using water charges)

Disarming or Neutralizing Bombs

If a device is confirmed, they carefully render it safe. Sometimes that means disabling it piece by piece; other times they perform a controlled detonation in a safe area.

Handling Military Ordnance

They're often called when old grenades, artillery shells, or other unexploded munitions are found.

Supporting Investigations

After an incident, they collect evidence to help identify who made the device and how it was constructed.

Public Safety Sweeps

Before large events (concerts, sports games, VIP visits), they check venues for potential threats.

Training & Expertise

Bomb technicians undergo extensive training in:

  • Electronics and wiring
  • Explosive chemistry
  • Robotics and remote operations
  • Tactical decision-making under extreme pressure

Bomb squad work is high-risk, highly specialized, and focused entirely on saving lives by preventing explosions before they happen.

Marine Patrol Unit

The Fairfax County Marine Patrol Unit (MPU), a specialized division of the Fairfax County Police Department, plays a critical role in maintaining safety across the county's waterways. The unit patrols the Upper and Lower Occoquan, the Potomac River, and various inland lakes, ensuring that community members and visitors can enjoy these areas safely. MPU officers are responsible for enforcing boating laws, responding to emergencies, and conducting search and rescue operations. Their work requires advanced training in marine navigation, water safety, and rapid response, allowing them to operate effectively in a wide range of conditions year-round.

The unit is composed of two full-time members and thirteen supplemental personnel. The full-time officers are also certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), enhancing the unit's ability to provide immediate medical assistance during incidents on the water. MPU maintains a fleet of specialized vessels, including a 29-foot Safe Boat and a 20-foot Metal Shark skiff, enabling versatile and rapid deployment. The unit also provides essential support to the Department's Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU), utilizing advanced technologies such as side-scan sonar and remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs). In addition, MPU personnel are trained in rapid dive operations, giving them unique capabilities in underwater search and recovery missions.

Underwater Search and Recovery Unit

The Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU) is a specialized, non-standing unit within the Special Response Unit. Its primary mission is to conduct searches in bodies of water requiring the use of Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA). Members of the unit, commonly referred to as the Dive Team, are highly trained and maintain specialized certifications to operate in a wide range of underwater environments. The unit is frequently deployed for body recovery and the retrieval of critical evidence, supporting both investigative and public safety operations. Team members are equipped to work in challenging conditions, including low visibility, hazardous waterways, and confined spaces, ensuring thorough, safe, and professional results.

In addition to operational duties, the Dive Team actively engages with the community and supports partner agencies. Highlights include participation in events such as the Polar Plunge and Touch-a-Truck, as well as providing assistance to other law enforcement and regional dive teams when needed.
