Little Pimmit Run Sanitary Sewer Realignment

Project Number: WW-000028-016

Project Update: June 5, 2026

Due to the site changing conditions, the current sanitary sewer design project will not serve as a long-term solution.  As a result, a study has been initiated to determine a sustainable long-term strategy for the sanitary sewer assets.  While the evaluation is underway, the County will monitor the sewer system and take necessary action(s) to mitigate risk.

Project Background

Stream crossings are inherent vulnerabilities in a sanitary sewer system. Stream flow places stress on the sanitary sewer pipes and can increase the potential for erosion and breakage, which results in costly emergency projects.

The Little Pimmit Run Sewer Replacement project originally began the design phase in coordination with the Little Pimmit Run at Chesterbrook Stream Restoration Project.

Based on feedback from the community, there was not sufficient support to implement a stream restoration. The proposed Little Pimmit Run at Chesterbrook Road Stream Restoration Project will not be completed.

The cancellation of the stream restoration project required significant changes to the sanitary sewer project’s design. Our team has worked diligently to update the plans to address the protection requirements that are no longer being addressed due to the cancellation of the stream restoration work.

During the updated design efforts, it was observed that the stream is eroding at a more rapid rate. Changing site conditions put the current plan’s long-term effects at risk. These changes have created new site conditions for the sanitary sewer assets, and the available options must be re-assessed.

Project Location

The assessment will look at the sanitary sewer pipe within the Little Pimmit run corridor from the intersection of Franklin Park Road and Solitaire Lane and continues northeast to Kirby Road within the Dranesville District.

Project Timeline

What to Expect

In the evaluation phase, residents may see Fairfax County Staff and their representative contractors completing non-invasive surveys or site visits.

Once the study is completed and a long-term sustainable solution has been identified, residents will be informed about recommendations and possible implementation schedule.

To minimize risk while solutions are being developed, residents may see tree removing activity to eliminate immediate risk of trees falling and damaging exposed pipes.

Project Cost and Funding Sources

Wastewater projects are funded through the county Capital Improvement Program.
