Big Rocky Run Downstream of Braddock Road

Project Number: SD-000031-264

Project Update: January 7, 2025

Design efforts for the stream restoration project along Big Rocky Run are currently underway, with a preliminary design plan expected to be submitted in mid-January.

Project Background

This project is a continuation of the Big Rocky Run at Braddock Road project. The site was evaluated by Fairfax County staff in 2021 and placed on the Capital Improvement Project workplan for Fiscal Year 2023. A study was initiated by staff in February 2023, to perform wetland delineation, vegetative inventory, and determine the presence (or lack thereof) of several threatened or endangered species. Fairfax County staff began negotiations in with a consultant in August 2023 to determine the scope of the restoration project, and the consultant was given notice to proceed with design in January 2024.

Project Description

The goals of this project are to:

  • Stabilize and restore sections of the stream bed to reduce potential for erosion.
  • Reduce nutrient and sediment transported downstream.
  • Protection of existing sanitary sewer infrastructure.
  • Provide better connection to the adjacent floodplain.

Project Location

The project extents are located in Rocky Run Stream Valley Park, with Braddock Road serving as the upstream limit and Awbrey Patent Drive serving as the downstream limit.

Project Phase

The project is currently in the Pre-Design Phase.

Timeline

Design of the project is currently projected to be completed in early 2026. Construction timeline is to be determined.

What to Expect

At times, contractors, consultants, and staff may be onsite to evaluate the design and validate field conditions and proposed improvements. Staff will be wearing high-visibility clothing.

Project Cost and Funding Source

Design of the Big Rocky Run at Downstream of Braddock Road stream restoration project is funded for $862,000. Construction funding is dependent upon budget availability in future Fiscal Years. Stormwater projects are funded through the Fairfax County Stormwater Service District.

Presentations to the Community

As the project advances through the iterative design development process, community meetings will be scheduled to present the project and its design to the residents along the project and to obtain feedback from the community. Meetings will be scheduled for a concept design, 65% design, 95% design, 100% design, and pre- and post-construction.
