On September 6, 2018, a 68-year-old African American inmate, Haywood Summers, was transported to the hospital from the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center infirmary. He had been in Sheriff’s Office custody for two days. At approximately 5:25 p.m. on September 13, the inmate experienced a medical emergency at the hospital. Hospital medical staff performed CPR without success. The inmate was pronounced deceased at 6:03 p.m. Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office policy dictates that an in-custody death must be investigated by the Fairfax County Police Department.
