“Shop with the Sheriff is our annual event that leaves an imprint on my heart,” says Fairfax County Sheriff Stacey Kincaid. Since 1992, the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office has taken children residing in emergency shelters on a back-to-school shopping trip at Target in Burke, VA.
This week, 39 children were paired with Sheriff’s deputies and civilian staff and could each spend a $250 gift card on appropriate clothing and shoes. Parents and caregivers provided a list of sizes and favorite colors.
“These children are experiencing difficult circumstances,” explained Kincaid. “We want them to enjoy the day and see that people in law enforcement care about them. We also want them to start the school year right with their heads held high. Every one of them deserves the opportunity to fit in with their peers.”
Joe Meyer is the executive director of Shelter House, a community-based, non-profit organization that provides safe housing and supportive services for individuals and families experiencing homelessness and for victims of domestic violence.
“My favorite part of Shop with the Sheriff is the smile on kids’ faces at Target and the deputies’ smiles, which are even bigger,” says Meyer.
Braddock District Supervisor James Walkinshaw was also on hand for the shopping event. He thanked Sheriff Kincaid for her strong leadership and the Target employees for their decades of support for the program.
Before going shopping, the children were treated to a pizza party by Paisano's and many fun, interactive activities by Princess Parties of DC, Sheriff’s Office staff and several volunteers.
