The Fairfax County Police Department reported an update on its investigation into a Sheriff's Office in-custody death: "The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has ruled the September death of a 53-year-old inmate who suffered a medical emergency in her cell at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center (ADC) a homicide. Our detectives received the autopsy results yesterday which revealed that Henrietta Smith, of Washington, D.C., died of blunt force trauma to the head. On August 31, 2017, at approximately 7 p.m., a Sheriff's deputy called a medical emergency for a 53-year-old female inmate who suddenly became ill in the Adult Detention Center. Medical staff and rescue responded, and the inmate was transported to Fairfax Hospital. The inmate died at approximately 11:04 a.m. on September 7, 2017. Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office policy dictates that an in-custody death must be investigated by the Fairfax County Police Department. The investigation is currently underway.
