Deputy Sheriff Expresses Her Gratitude by Giving Back to Community

November 25, 2024

Deputy Sheriff Milka Yemane was born and raised in Eritrea, East Africa, above Ethiopia. Growing up there taught her to appreciate life and be grateful for everything. It also showed her the importance of living within your means and helping those less fortunate.

Yemane and her family moved to the United States in 2010 and initially lived in an emergency shelter. A year later, her mother was able to transition the family from the shelter to a townhouse. Despite the briefness of the shelter experience, it instilled in Yemane values of humility, gratitude, understanding, hard work, kindness and compassion. She has found fulfillment and joy from volunteer work in her neighborhoods, community and local churches.

Upon learning about the 2024 Shop with a Sheriff event, Yemane was reminded of her own upbringing. Her eagerness to contribute to the event and support the children was genuine, particularly with the new school year on the horizon. Engaging with the children, attentively listening to their stories, and witnessing their joyous expressions brought her profound satisfaction. She was enthusiastic about spending time with the children to build connections.

Yemane was assigned to Zoe, a girl who was genuinely grateful for the experience. Beyond the shopping excursion, Zoe enjoyed engaging in arts and crafts activities and crafted a bracelet for Yemane. “All of these moments together were significant,” said Yemane. “Zoe and the other children will remember this day throughout their lives.”

“I'm grateful for my experiences, which have shaped me into who I am today,” she said. “My purpose is to help those in need and be a kind presence in an uncertain world. The 2024 Shop with a Sheriff event reminded me of the importance of being there for others in every way possible."
