School has been in session since July 2020 inside the Adult Detention Center (ADC), even with the COVID-pandemic. Fairfax County Public Schools teachers are instructing inmates in person with one inmate per class, following Sheriff’s Office protocols and CDC guidelines.
The GED tests offered inside the ADC are the same as what is available on the outside. Similarly, the high school graduates must complete the same requirements as any other student in a typical Fairfax County high school. The jail-based education team helps inmates transition to the equivalent community-based programs if they are released prior to attaining their GED or high school diploma.
Sheriff Stacey Kincaid congratulates the 10 inmates who earned their GED and the four inmates who earned their high school diploma during this school year while incarcerated. Seven other inmates are active students, thus far passing at least one of the four GED exams.
“My hope,” said Kincaid, “is that this significant achievement builds your self-confidence and inspires you to take a productive path forward upon your release."
