No Metro? Your Blue and Yellow Line Summer Shutdown Travel Questions Answered

COMMUTERS AND VISITORS - 3 Things to Do to Prepare

Fairfax County commuters and travelers are reminded that beginning this Memorial Day, the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA) will be closing six (6) Metrorail Blue and Yellow line stations south of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport for full platform reconstruction and major station improvements. To expedite construction and minimize customer inconvenience, Braddock Road, King Street, Eisenhower Avenue, Huntington, Van Dorn Street, and Franconia-Springfield stations will be closed from Memorial Day, May 25, 2019, through Sept. 8, 2019, to allow for around-the-clock work.

Fairfax County commuters and travelers are urged to plan now and know the various travel options available to them to avoid adding to the gridlock by driving alone. Impacted Fairfax County commuters who are considering trying alternate transit and ridesharing options instead of driving alone can take a quick survey to see if they qualify for a $50 commuter incentive.

1. Plan NOW! - Use online tools to plan your travel via transit, ridesharing, and more!
2. Find Alternate Transit Connections - Check fairfaxcounty.gov/transportation/travel-alerts/metro-platforms and consider these key connections:
  • Metro Blue Line and Yellow Line Shuttle Bus Service
    • WMATA will be providing FREE shuttle bus service (BL shuttle map I YL shuttle map) in the impacted area partially replacing the trains along the Blue and Yellow Lines.
  • **UPDATE** Springfield <> Pentagon Enhanced Express Bus Service
    • Fairfax Connector will be providing enhanced express service from Springfield to the Pentagon (schedules and maps) on Routes 393 (Saratoga Park and ride – Pentagon – Mark Center) and 394 (Saratoga Park and Ride to Pentagon).
    • This enhanced weekday rush-hour service will operate every 10 minutes to and from the Saratoga Park and Ride from 5:13-10:08 a.m., and from 3:35-7:59 p.m.
  • **UPDATE** Virginia Railway Express (VRE) to Crystal City, L’Enfant Plaza and Union Station
3. Park and Rides - Check park-and-ride facilities with available parking to catch an express bus, a VRE train, a carpool/vanpool, or to form a slug line.
