Online Workshop - Vaping: The New Look of Nicotine Addiction

Nearly 1 of every 3 Fairfax County youth have tried vaping in their lifetime. E-cigarette use is more prevalent among youth than conventional tobacco use. It is critical that parents, educators and other adults who work with youth understand what vaping is, how to recognize a vaping device, the harm it can cause, and resources to help youth quit. Staff from the Fairfax-Falls Church CSB provide this workshop for more information.

Knowing the Signs: Substance Abuse and Today's Youth

Local substance abuse expert, Sam Lucania, with support from Fairfax County Public Schools Office of Student Safety and Wellness, shares some of his life experiences and lessons learned. Learn how to improve your ability to handle the unexpected influences in your child’s life. 

Online Workshop - Raising a Screen Smart Kid with Julianna Miner

George Mason University instructor and author Julianna Miner gives straight-forward advice can help parents set sensible guidelines for their children’s use of technology, while reducing unexpected consequences.

Child welfare professionals, can learn about sex offender characteristics, including adults and adolescents that commit sexual offenses. Registration is required. (Information coming soon.)

Want to better understand mental illness, learn how to help someone experiencing a crisis and possibly save a life? This 2-day, 8-hour training course primarily designed for adults – family members, caregivers, school staff, coaches, health and human services workers, etc. – who interact with young people ages 12-25. The program gives community members key skills to help a young person who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis resolves.

SCAN and the Allies in Prevention Coalition will host the 18th Annual Allies in Prevention Awards to honor five remarkable heroes working to protect children, support families and prevent child abuse and neglect across Northern Virginia.
