Fairfax County Department of Family Services recently highlighted its work in a practical, heartwarming way to students at the University of Lynchburg. Professor Dan Murphy’s criminology classes welcomed a visit from Rylynn, the DFS facility dog, and her handler, Samantha “Sam” Carrico, a supervisor within DFS’ Children, Youth, and Families Division.
As a guest speaker, Sam explained that Rylynn is trained to support children and families throughout a sexual abuse investigation. Sam’s presentation helped open students’ eyes to new career possibilities in child welfare while demonstrating first-hand the comfort Rylynn provides. Facility dogs like Rylynn help reduce trauma and re-victimization throughout investigations and legal proceedings. Learn more about the work of Sam and Rylynn.
Sam said, “We can always use more purposeful, mission-driven individuals to join our profession. I am encouraged by the passion and interest of the criminology students I interacted with today.”
