Fairfax County’s Department of Family Services (DFS) works diligently to strengthen families by involving fathers and father figures. Research shows that fathers play an important role in how children grow and develop and how families work together.
Our Father Engagement Unit is now integrated with staff in our Parenting Education Programs to expand the reach and impact of the program in our community. They partnered with regional groups and the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS), Division of Family Services, to plan a robust Fatherhood Engagement Month recognizing and supporting fathers across the state. Those partnerships continue to grow.
The program’s staff members are energized to raise awareness, build partnerships, and support future teamwork. Our Fatherhood Engagement unit works with the whole family for their success. We’ve seen that when fathers are involved in a positive way with their families, it benefits mothers and children too.
Our Dads Parenting Groups are a key part of this work. Fathers can join us starting on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026, at the Pennino Building from 6 to 8:30 p.m. or for Spanish-speaking dads, we’ll also offer a virtual group starting on Wednesday, Sept. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m.
